Program overview

Queen’s Concurrent Education (ConEd) is an accelerated program designed for secondary school graduates aspiring to become exceptional educators. This unique program allows students to earn two degrees simultaneously: an Honours Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Education (BEd). The program is structured to be completed in just 5 years plus one summer term, enabling graduates to enter the job market a full year earlier than many other Ontario faculties of education. A BEd from Queen’s is not only recognized across Canada but also internationally, providing graduates with a wealth of teaching opportunities worldwide.

Program structure

The Concurrent Education program is structured over 5 years plus one summer term, allowing students to complete their degrees efficiently. Here’s a brief overview of the program structure:

  • Years 1-3: Students take education courses alongside their Arts and Science degree, gaining hands-on experience through placements in non-classroom settings.
  • Year 3: Students complete their first in-school placement, gaining practical teaching experience.
  • Year 4: Students can apply for specialized track programs or select a concentration, combining courses with a three-week alternative practicum.
  • Year 5: Classes are organized in a block format, with 15 weeks of practicum in an Ontario classroom and an alternative practicum anywhere in the world.

Throughout the program, students have the opportunity to choose their teaching divisions, either Primary-Junior (JK–Grade 6) or Intermediate-Senior (Grades 7–12), and engage in various educational experiences that enhance their teaching skills.

Featured Experiences

  • Hands-on experience through self-arranged placements in non-classroom settings during the first two years.
  • In-year 3, students complete a 3-week practicum in an Ontario classroom, working alongside experienced educators.
  • In year 5, students spend 15 weeks in publicly funded Ontario schools, applying their learning in real classroom settings.
  • Opportunity to complete a three-week alternative practicum anywhere in the world, aligning with the goals of their concentration.
  • Access to diverse educational environments, including early learning centres, museums, and community organizations.
