Program Overview

The Honours Bachelor of Arts (History Major)/Bachelor of Education (Intermediate/Senior) is a unique concurrent degree program offered at both the Thunder Bay and Orillia campuses of Lakehead University. This program allows students to pursue a comprehensive education in history while simultaneously preparing for a career in teaching at the intermediate and senior levels. Students are required to maintain a minimum overall average of 70% in their history courses to continue in the program. This dual focus not only enriches students' understanding of historical contexts but also equips them with the pedagogical skills necessary for effective teaching.

Program Structure

The Honours Bachelor of Arts - History & Bachelor of Education - Intermediate/Senior program is structured over a period of six years. The program is designed to provide a balanced education in both history and education, ensuring that students are well-prepared for their future careers. The structure includes:

  • First Year: Introduction to History, English or Indigenous Language, Type B courses, and Education.
  • Second Year: Advanced History courses, electives, and Education.
  • Third Year: Further History studies, electives, and Education electives.
  • Fourth Year: In-depth History courses and electives.
  • Fifth and Sixth Year: Completion of the 2-Year Professional Program in Education.

Students must also select two teachable subjects, with History being the primary focus. The program includes specific requirements for Indigenous content, ensuring a well-rounded educational experience.
