Program Overview

Turn your passion for helping others into an in-demand profession with Humber’s Practical Nursing (RPN) program. Our program provides you with the confidence, clinical expertise, and hands-on experience preparing you to take on the challenges and rewards of a career in health care. You’ll graduate ready to write the registration exam and start careers in hospitals, long-term care, and community health settings across Ontario. The program is offered at three locations: North Campus, Lakeshore Campus, and the new Humber Heights Living Classroom, providing flexibility to study where it suits you best.

Program Structure

The Practical Nursing program at Humber is designed to be completed in 4 semesters. This program offers a comprehensive curriculum that includes both theoretical and practical components, ensuring that students are well-prepared for their future careers. Key features of the program structure include:

  • Mandatory professional practicums in each semester, providing approximately 1,000 hours of hands-on experience.
  • Interprofessional Education (IPE) courses that foster collaboration among students from various health disciplines.
  • State-of-the-art facilities, including a cadaver lab, bioscience and anatomy labs, and advanced simulation facilities.
  • Real-world clinical placements with leading health-care organizations throughout the Greater Toronto Area.

Students also have the option to participate in community service learning, enhancing their practical experience while giving back to the community.

Graduates of the Practical Nursing program can pursue a variety of career opportunities in Canada, including:

  • Registered Practical Nurse (RPN): Provide direct patient care in various health care settings, including hospitals and long-term care facilities.
  • Community Health Nurse: Work with individuals and families in community settings to promote health and prevent illness.
  • Mental Health Nurse: Support patients with mental health issues, providing care and interventions to improve their well-being.
  • Rehabilitation Nurse: Assist patients recovering from surgery or injury, helping them regain independence and improve their quality of life.
  • School Nurse: Provide health care and education to students in educational settings, addressing health concerns and promoting wellness.

Many graduates also choose to further their education by completing a Bachelor of Science in Nursing or pursuing advanced skills education in specialty areas such as surgery, dialysis, and emergency care.
