College Diploma - Practical Nursing (PNRS)

Academic Requirements

The Academic Requirements for the Practical Nursing program at Georgian College are as follows:

• Ontario secondary school diploma (OSSD) or equivalent, mature student status
• Grade 12 English (C or U)
• Grade 12 Mathematics (C or U)
• Grade 11 or 12 Biology (C or U)
• Grade 12 (C) or Grade 11 or 12 (U) Chemistry OR Grade 12 (C) or Grade 11 or 12 (U) Physics

Mature students, non-secondary school applicants (19 years or older), and home school applicants may also be considered for admission. Eligibility may be met by applicants who have taken equivalent courses, upgrading, completed their GED, and equivalency testing.

It is recommended that applicants achieve a minimum grade of 75% in each prerequisite subject.

Additionally, students must complete a Criminal Reference/Vulnerable Sector Check prior to clinical placements. It is advised to obtain this check three months before placement, as checks conducted earlier may not be considered current. Note that individuals with unresolved criminal charges or convictions will be prohibited from proceeding to a clinical or work placement.

Students are also required to have a completed and verified Clinical Preparedness Permit to be eligible for practicum placements. This includes:

• A mask fit test, renewed every two years
• Level HCP/BLS CPR and Standard First Aid prior to commencing the program (online courses are not acceptable)
• Up-to-date immunization records in compliance with the Public Hospitals Act
• An up-to-date clear criminal reference check and vulnerable sector screen

Language Requirements

At Georgian College, the language of instruction is English. Therefore, all applicants whose first language is not English, or who come from countries where English is not an official language, must provide proof of their English language proficiency.

To meet Georgian's language proficiency requirements, applicants must fulfill **ONE** of the following criteria:

• Completed three full years of study at the secondary school level in English in a country where English is a primary language (four years are required for BScN, Pharmacy Technician, and Addictions: Treatment and Prevention. Study must be in Canada only for Pharmacy Technician).
• Completed one full year of study in an accredited postsecondary program in English in a country where English is a primary language (not applicable to BScN, Pharmacy Technician, and Addictions: Treatment and Prevention).
• Possess an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (or Canadian provincial equivalent) and English credit (Grade 12 U, M, or C) issued by a public or Catholic school board (not applicable to BScN, Pharmacy Technician, and Addictions: Treatment and Prevention).
• Provide proof of graduation from one of the authorized Georgian College partner school pathway programs (not applicable to BScN or Pharmacy Technician).
• Completed three years of study at a secondary private school in Ontario and received an Ontario Secondary School Diploma and English credit (Grade 12 U, M, or C).

Acceptable language tests include, but are not limited to:

* Duolingo will forward your test results directly to Georgian College.

** Require minimum bands of 22 in writing and 22 in speaking.

*** Minimum bands of 50.
