Program overview

The Access to Practical Nursing (APN) program is tailored for individuals who have completed or hold a Health Care Assistant Certificate (HCA). This program allows students to complete their studies in 16 months, compared to the 22 months required for the direct entry Practical Nursing (PN) program. The APN program equips graduates with the skills necessary to provide professional nursing care to individuals and families across various settings. Upon completion, graduates are eligible to write the Regulatory Exam – Practical Nurse (REx-PN) to obtain licensure as Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs). The program meets or exceeds all provincial education competencies required for LPN graduates.

Program structure

The Access to Practical Nursing Diploma is a 16-month full-time program structured into three levels. The program is designed to build on the foundational knowledge gained from the Health Care Assistant Certificate. Here’s a brief overview of the program structure:

  • Access Level: This level combines training from Levels 1 and 2 of the revised Practical Nursing Provincial Curriculum, granting prior learning credits for knowledge and skills acquired in the HCA, RCA, and HS/RCA certificate programs.
  • Level Three and Level Four: These levels align with Levels three and four of the revised Practical Nursing Provincial Curriculum.

Students are required to complete a minimum of 600 hours of work experience as Health Care Assistants before transitioning into the APN program. The program includes a short break between the Access Level and Level Three, ensuring a comprehensive educational experience.
