Academic Requirements

The admission requirements for the Advanced College Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology (MLBT) at Georgian College are as follows:

Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent, or mature student status.
Grade 12 Mathematics (C or U).
Grade 12 English (C or U).
Grade 11 or 12 Biology (C or U).
Grade 12 Chemistry (C or U).

Graduates from the Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLBA) program at Georgian College can apply to the MLBT program with advanced standing. A minimum grade point average of 65% is recommended.

Admission requirements may also be met by completing the Pre-Health Sciences Pathway to Advanced Diplomas and Degrees certificate, or equivalent courses from the Academic Upgrading programs offered by Colleges across Ontario.

For international students, it is essential to ensure that all academic credentials are evaluated and recognized. Students are encouraged to contact LOA Portal's advisors for any clarification and support regarding the application process.

Transcripts may be required to be evaluated by WES in some cases.

Additional requirements for advanced standing to Year 2 of MLBT from practicing Medical Laboratory Assistants or Medical Laboratory Technicians (MLA/T) include:

Certification from OSMT (Ontario Society of Medical Technologists), MLPAO (Medical Laboratory Professionals Association of Ontario), or CSMLS (Canadian Society of Medical Laboratory Science).
Three years of experience practicing as a MLA/T.
Letter of reference from Manager highlighting performance as an MLA/T, scope of practice being performed, and readiness to succeed in the program.
Current CV or resume.

Mature students, non-secondary school applicants (19 years or older), and home school applicants may also be considered for admission. Eligibility may be met by applicants who have taken equivalent courses, upgrading, completed their GED, and equivalency testing.

It is important to note that this program is highly competitive, and applicants will be assessed and ranked based on academic grades. The overall minimum GPA is determined annually.

Prior to beginning clinical placements, students must complete several requirements, including:

A mask fit test, renewed every two years.
Level HCP CPR and Standard First Aid (online courses are not acceptable).
Up-to-date immunization records in compliance with the Public Hospitals Act.
An up-to-date clear criminal reference check and vulnerable sector screen (renewed regularly).

Students are responsible for meeting all immunization, criminal screening, and other requirements by the deadline provided by the program and before starting their placement.

Language Requirements

For the Advanced College Diploma - Medical Laboratory Technology (MLBT) program, applicants must demonstrate English language proficiency. The following English language tests are accepted:

Duolingo Language Test: Minimum score of 110
TOEFL internet-based test (IBT): Minimum score of 79
TOEFL paper-based test: Minimum score of 550
IELTS Academic only: Minimum overall band score of 6.0
YELT: Minimum score of 1-5
TOEIC (Public Test): Minimum score of 800
Graduate of Level 8 of Georgian’s GAAS – English for Academic Purposes: 60% in certificate or completion of level 8 with 70% or higher
Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL)/CAEL Online: Minimum score of 60
Pearson Test of Academic English (PTE): Minimum score of 58
Cambridge English: C1 Advanced (CAE): Minimum score of 170
