Program Overview

The Autism and Behavioural Science program at Mohawk College is designed to equip students with the skills necessary to improve the quality of life for individuals with autism and their families. Utilizing the principles of Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA), this program focuses on teaching socially significant skills that can lead to meaningful changes in behavior. With a strong emphasis on evidence-based treatments, students will learn to design, implement, and evaluate treatment plans tailored to the unique needs of individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). This program not only prepares students to work directly with individuals with autism but also emphasizes the importance of family involvement in the treatment process.

Program Structure

The Autism and Behavioural Science program is structured to provide a comprehensive education over a one academic year period, which spans 8 months. The program includes a variety of learning experiences designed to prepare students for real-world applications in the field. Key components of the program structure include:

  • Hands-on training through interactive simulations.
  • Two unpaid field placements totaling 322 hours in community settings such as hospitals, clinics, and classrooms.
  • Opportunities to apply evidence-based treatments and behavioral strategies.
  • Training for caregivers to implement techniques effectively.

This program is designed to ensure that students not only gain theoretical knowledge but also practical experience, making them well-prepared for their future careers in the field of autism and behavioral science.
