Academic Requirements

For the Master of Science in Psychological Science with a specialization in Gerontology, applicants must meet the following Academic Requirements:

• Applicants must be graduates of a recognized university, college, or institute and show evidence of scholarly achievement.
• A four-year bachelor's degree or its equivalent with at least second class standing (B) based on the last 20 half courses or equivalent is required.
• For applicants from countries that follow a British-patterned grading system, a minimum grade of B, or Second Class, Upper Division, is required.
• Applicants must hold an Honours Bachelor of Arts or Science degree from an approved college or university in Psychology or a related interdisciplinary program, with at least a 70% average (B) based on their last 20 half courses or equivalent.
• An undergraduate thesis (or equivalent research experience) is required for admission into the MSc Psychological Science program.
• Students who have not completed a degree course in advanced statistics and experimental design will be required to take Psychology 4111 (Statistics for Psychology 3) in addition to the regular requirements for the MSc Psychological Science program.
• Offers of admission may include any course prerequisites and/or co-requisites, which must be successfully completed with a minimum grade of 70% within the period outlined in the offer of admission.
• Transcripts may be required to be evaluated by WES in some cases.

For international students, it is recommended to have an overall standing of Second Class - Upper Division or higher. Meeting the minimum application requirements does not guarantee admission, and all applicants will be advised by the Office of Graduate Studies in writing of their admission status.

The application for the Master of Science in Psychological Science will close to domestic applicants on April 1st. Only complete applications will be reviewed. Therefore, it is advisable to apply as soon as possible.

Language Requirements

Applicants whose first language is not English must demonstrate they can cope with the language demands of an English language university. Lakehead University accepts the following as proof of English language proficiency:

• Successful completion of one of the below language tests with the required minimum scores
• Successful completion of Lakehead University’s Academic English Program
• Successful completion of one of our approved Pathway Partner’s ESL programs
• Successful completion of Senior Level English courses

To satisfy Lakehead University's English language proficiency requirements, applicants can complete one of the following recognized language tests with the required minimum scores:

1. Canadian Academic English Language Assessment (CAEL) - Minimum Score: 60
2. Cambridge Academic English (C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency) - Minimum Score: 176 (no individual score less than 169)
3. Duolingo English Test - Minimum Score: 110
4. International English Language Testing System (IELTS) - Minimum Score: 6.5 (no individual score less than 6.0)
5. Michigan English Test (MET) - Minimum Score: 85
6. Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic) - Minimum Score: 58 (no component score less than 50)
7. Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) - Minimum Score for Internet Based Test (iBT): 80 (no component score less than 19)
