Humber’s Graduate Certificate in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) is designed to cultivate confident and knowledgeable educators who are well-versed in the best practices for teaching English as a second language (ESL). The program features an innovative curriculum that incorporates the latest ESL teaching methodologies and assessment systems, including the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB). Students will delve into various theoretical issues surrounding adult second language acquisition, learning theories, grammar, linguistics, and the integration of technology in language teaching. A significant aspect of the program is the opportunity for students to apply their learning through classroom observations and practice teaching during the practicum, ensuring they gain practical experience alongside theoretical knowledge.

Program Structure

The Graduate Certificate in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) program is structured to be completed in 2 semesters. The program offers a variety of delivery options to accommodate different learning preferences, including:

  • In-Person Classes
  • Online Asynchronous Courses
  • Online Synchronous Courses
  • Hybrid Courses (a mix of in-person and online)

Students will engage in a professional practicum that is fully arranged and supervised by a placement advisor, allowing them to focus on their learning. The practicum includes:

  • 50 hours of professional experience in various settings, such as adult ESL classes and community agencies.
  • Global practicum placements and internships at international partner institutions.
  • Opportunities to work within Humber’s English for Academic Purposes program.
