Academic Requirements

The Academic Requirements for the Personal Support Worker (PSW) program at Georgian College are as follows:

• Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent, or mature student status.
• Grade 12 English (C or U).
• Mature students, non-secondary school applicants (19 years or older), and home school applicants may also be considered for admission. Eligibility may be met by applicants who have taken equivalent courses, upgrading, completed their GED, and equivalency testing.
• Criminal Reference/Vulnerable Sector Check: Placement agencies require an up-to-date clear criminal reference check and vulnerable sector check prior to going out on placement. Students should obtain their criminal reference three months prior to placement; checks conducted earlier may not be considered current. It is the student’s responsibility to provide the completed document prior to placement start.
• Clinical Placement Requirements: Students must have an up-to-date immunization record in compliance with the Public Hospitals Act. Completion and submission of this record is required during registration in order to ensure your placement in clinical facilities.
• To be eligible for all practicum placements, students must have a completed Clinical Preparedness Permit – current (within 1 year) Level HCP CPR and Standard First Aid on admission to the program. Level HCP CPR must be renewed annually while in the program.
• A current police check including a vulnerable sector screen is required.
• A record of mask fit test (will be done at the college in semester one). Mask fit testing must be renewed every 2 years.

Transcripts may be required to be evaluated by WES in some cases.

Language Requirements

At Georgian College, the language of instruction is English. Therefore, all applicants whose first language is not English, or who come from countries where English is not an official language, must provide proof of English language proficiency.

To meet Georgian's language proficiency requirements, applicants must fulfill **ONE** of the following criteria:

• Completed three full years of study at the secondary school level in English in a country where English is a primary language (four years are required for BScN, Pharmacy Technician, and Addictions: Treatment and Prevention. Study must be in Canada only for Pharmacy Technician).
• Completed one full year of study in an accredited postsecondary program in English in a country where English is a primary language (not applicable to BScN, Pharmacy Technician, and Addictions: Treatment and Prevention).
• Possess an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (or Canadian provincial equivalent) and English credit (Grade 12 U, M, or C) issued by a public or Catholic school board (not applicable to BScN, Pharmacy Technician, and Addictions: Treatment and Prevention).
• Provide proof of graduation from one of the authorized Georgian College partner school pathway programs (not applicable to BScN or Pharmacy Technician).
• Completed three years of study at a secondary private school in Ontario and received an Ontario Secondary School Diploma and English credit (Grade 12 U, M, or C).

Acceptable language tests include, but are not limited to:

* Duolingo will forward your test results directly to Georgian College.

** Require minimum bands of 22 in writing and 22 in speaking.
