Program Overview

Mechanical Technicians are experts in mechanical devices and manufacturing. They possess a unique skill set that overlaps with Industrial Mechanics and Mechanical Engineering Technologists. In this program, students will learn the fundamental functions of pipefitting, welding, rigging, electrical work, and machining. The program emphasizes hands-on training in various systems, including mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, lubrication, cooling, and exhaust systems found in industrial plants. Graduates of this program will have a broad training base, equipping them with two specialized forms of knowledge that are highly valued in a competitive job market.

Program Structure

The Mechanical Technician program is designed to be completed within two and a half years of full-time study. This program offers a blend of theoretical knowledge and practical skills, ensuring that students are well-prepared for the workforce. Key features of the program structure include:

  • Hands-on training in mechanical systems
  • Focus on practical applications in industrial settings
  • Optional co-op placements available, though limited seats
  • Blended delivery format starting in September 2026

Students will engage in various areas of study, including communications, shop practices, applied mechanics, and maintenance planning, among others. The program is structured to provide a comprehensive understanding of mechanical systems and their applications in real-world scenarios.

Featured Experiences

The Mechanical Technician program offers several unique experiences that enhance learning and employability:

  • Co-op placements that provide real-world work experience, complementing academic studies.
  • Hands-on training in various mechanical systems, including hydraulics and pneumatics.
  • Access to a connected learning environment with technology requirements to support learning.
  • Opportunities to challenge Level 1 & 2 Industrial Mechanic (Millwright) examinations upon graduation.
  • Accreditation by Cooperative-Education and Work-Integrated Learning Canada (CEWIL Canada) for six years.

Career Options

Graduates of the Mechanical Technician program can pursue a variety of career opportunities in Canada, including:

  • Maintenance Staff: Responsible for the upkeep and repair of machinery in various industrial settings.
  • Operators: Oversee the operation of machinery and equipment in manufacturing and processing plants.
