Program overview

Academic Requirements

To be eligible for admission to the Bachelor of Arts in Psychology program, students must meet the following requirements:

Completion of 24 credit hours, including:

Psychology 1000 and 1001
Six credit hours in Critical Reading and Writing (CRW) courses, with at least 3 credit hours in English courses
One of the following Mathematics courses: Mathematics 1000, 1006, or Statistics 1500, or two of Mathematics 1090, 1050, and 1051
Six credit hours of electives (9 credit hours if Mathematics 1000, 1006, or Statistics 1500 is successfully completed)

Students must achieve the following minimum averages:

A minimum average of 65% in PSYC 1000/1001
A minimum average of 60% overall in PSYC/MATH/CRW

It is important to note that admission is highly competitive. Meeting the minimum course grade requirements does not guarantee admission. The selection process will consider:

The average of course grades from the last two full-time semesters
The cumulative GPA from all Memorial University courses

Transfer credits for the above requirements are accepted. Students must have obtained at least three numeric grades in Memorial University courses to be considered for admission.

If any required courses are in progress at the time of application, students may still apply, but a decision will be made only after final grades are received. Conditional acceptance may be granted in such cases.

Language Requirements

English language proficiency for general admission may be demonstrated through a valid score on one of the following standardized tests taken within two years prior to the start of the semester of admission. Final results should be submitted based on the instructions listed with each test.

Cambridge English Language Assessment: A minimum score of 176 in C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency. Submission: Certificate should be uploaded to the admissions portal.
Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL) Assessment: A minimum overall score of 60. Submission: Official score report should be uploaded to the admissions portal.
Duolingo English Test (DET): A minimum overall score of 115. Submission: Upon receipt of your certified test results, you should send the results from your Duolingo account to Memorial University of Newfoundland.
International English Language Testing System (IELTS): A minimum overall band score of 6.5 on the IELTS Academic or IELTS Academic for UKVI with at least a band 6 in reading and writing. General Training results are not acceptable. Submission: Test report form should be uploaded to the admissions portal.
Michigan English Test (MET): A minimum score of 59 is required on the MET. Submission: Document must be sent directly from official testing authority to the Office of the Registrar by post or courier.
Pearson Test of Academic English (PTE ACADEMIC): A minimum overall score of 60. Submission: Score Report should be uploaded to the admissions portal.
Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL): A minimum score of 83 on the TOEFL iBT or TOEFL iBT Home Edition, with a minimum score of 20 in reading and writing. Submission: Score Report should be uploaded to the admissions portal.
