Academic Requirements

To apply for the Bachelor of Arts in Psychology program at Memorial University, prospective students must meet specific Academic Requirements. Here are the key points to consider:

Direct entry into the Faculty of Science or the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences from high school is subject to meeting the general Academic Requirements for Memorial University.
Applicants must have appropriate courses in mathematics and a laboratory science for the Bachelor of Science program. If a laboratory science subject is not completed, applicants should apply for the Bachelor of Arts program.
It is important to note that you cannot choose psychology as your major at the time of application. Admission into the major requires the completion of university-level courses.

For international students, particularly those from Vietnam and other Asian countries, the following requirements apply:

Applicants must have completed a minimum of 24 credit hours (eight courses) to be eligible for admission to the psychology major.
Among these, six credit hours must be in Critical Reading and Writing (CRW) courses, including at least three credit hours in English.
Students must complete one of the following: Mathematics 1000, 1006, or Statistics 1500, or two of Mathematics 1090, 1050, or 1051 (or equivalent).
Psychology 1000 and 1001 must also be completed.
Additionally, six credit hours of elective courses are required (three additional credit hours if only Mathematics 1000 is completed).
A minimum average of 65% in Psychology 1000 and 1001 and an overall average of 60% in psychology, CRW, and mathematics courses is required.

Language Requirements

English language proficiency for general admission may be demonstrated through a valid score on one of the following standardized tests taken within two years prior to the start of the semester of admission. Final results should be submitted based on the instructions listed with each test.

Cambridge English Language Assessment: A minimum score of 176 in C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency. Submission: Certificate should be uploaded to the admissions portal.
Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL) Assessment: A minimum overall score of 60. Submission: Official score report should be uploaded to the admissions portal.
Duolingo English Test (DET): A minimum overall score of 115. Submission: Upon receipt of your certified test results, you should send the results from your Duolingo account to Memorial University of Newfoundland.
International English Language Testing System (IELTS): A minimum overall band score of 6.5 on the IELTS Academic or IELTS Academic for UKVI with at least a band 6 in reading and writing. General Training results are not acceptable. Submission: Test report form should be uploaded to the admissions portal.
Michigan English Test (MET): A minimum score of 59 is required on the MET. Submission: Document must be sent directly from official testing authority to the Office of the Registrar by post or courier.
Pearson Test of Academic English (PTE ACADEMIC): A minimum overall score of 60. Submission: Score Report should be uploaded to the admissions portal.
Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL): A minimum score of 83 on the TOEFL iBT or TOEFL iBT Home Edition, with a minimum score of 20 in reading and writing. Submission: Score Report should be uploaded to the admissions portal.
