Program overview

Academic Requirements

The Academic Requirements for the Bachelor of Science - Psychology (Honours) program are as follows:

Students must have successfully completed the following courses:
- Psychology 2910
- Psychology 2911
- Psychology 2930
- Psychology 3910
A minimum of 12 credit hours in Psychology 2X21 courses is required.
A minimum of 9 credit hours in Psychology courses at or above the 3000 level, including at least 3 credit hours in 3X5X courses, must be completed by the end of the semester in which the student is applying.
Students must obtain a grade of "B" or better, or an average of 75% or higher in these courses.
Admission is highly competitive; satisfying minimum course grade requirements does not guarantee admission.
Students must find an honours supervisor before being admitted to the program.
Transcripts may be required to be evaluated by WES in some cases.

To determine admission to the honours program, a student’s academic average will be calculated in two different ways:

The average of course grades received in all senior-level psychology major and neuroscience major courses (numbered 2000 and above).
The cumulative GPA of all MUN courses to date.

The higher of these two averages will be used to determine a student’s position on the list of students eligible for admission. Note that the actual average used for acceptance will vary each year based on the applicant pool.

Language Requirements

English language proficiency for general admission may be demonstrated through a valid score on one of the following standardized tests taken within two years prior to the start of the semester of admission. Final results should be submitted based on the instructions listed with each test.

Cambridge English Language Assessment: A minimum score of 176 in C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency. Submission: Certificate should be uploaded to the admissions portal.

Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL) Assessment: A minimum overall score of 60. Submission: Official score report should be uploaded to the admissions portal.

Duolingo English Test (DET): A minimum overall score of 115. Submission: Upon receipt of your certified test results, you should send the results from your Duolingo account to Memorial University of Newfoundland.

International English Language Testing System (IELTS): A minimum overall band score of 6.5 on the IELTS Academic or IELTS Academic for UKVI with at least a band 6 in reading and writing. General Training results are not acceptable. Submission: Test report form should be uploaded to the admissions portal.

Michigan English Test (MET): A minimum score of 59 is required on the MET. Submission: Document must be sent directly from official testing authority to the Office of the Registrar by post or courier.

Pearson Test of Academic English (PTE ACADEMIC): A minimum overall score of 60. Submission: Score Report should be uploaded to the admissions portal.

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL): A minimum score of 83 on the TOEFL iBT or TOEFL iBT Home Edition, with a minimum score of 20 in reading and writing. Submission: Score Report should be uploaded to the admissions portal.
