Academic Requirements

Applicants for the Master of Science in Computer Science program at Lakehead University must meet the following Academic Requirements:

• Graduates of a recognized university, college, or institute.
• A four-year bachelor's degree or its equivalent with at least a second class standing (B) based on the last 20 half courses or equivalent.
• For applicants from countries with a British-patterned grading system, a minimum grade of B, or Second Class, Upper Division, is required.
• Transcripts may be required to be evaluated by WES in some cases.
• For international applicants, it is recommended to have an overall standing of Second Class - Upper Division or higher.
• Students entering the Master's program are expected to have at least a "B" average in an Honours Computer Science program or equivalent from an accredited university.
• Necessary undergraduate prerequisites for the graduate courses must be completed.

Specific requirements for international students include:

• Submission of unofficial documents: final transcript, proof of graduation, CV, Statement of Purpose, and the Computer Science Background Form.
• For the Project and Thesis options, 1-3 references are required depending on the program type.

It is important to note that meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee admission, as all applicants will be advised by the Office of Graduate Studies in writing of their admission status.

Language Requirements

Lakehead University requires applicants whose first language is not English to demonstrate their proficiency in the English language. This can be achieved through various means, including years of study in an English-speaking environment or by providing proof of English language proficiency through recognized tests.

Applicants can meet the English language requirements by completing a certain number of years of study at a school where English is the language of instruction:

• University Level: One year of full-time undergraduate/graduate-level study at a university where English is the language of instruction in a country where English is the official language.
• College Level: Two years of full-time diploma level study at a college where English is the language of instruction in a country where English is the official language.
• High School Level: Three years of full-time study at a high school where English is the language of instruction. English does not need to be the official language of the country.

For those who cannot verify having recently studied in an English language school system, proof of English language proficiency is required. Lakehead University accepts the following as proof of English language proficiency:

1. Successful completion of one of the recognized language tests with the required minimum scores.
2. Successful completion of Lakehead University’s Academic English Program.
3. Successful completion of one of our approved Pathway Partner’s ESL programs.
4. Successful completion of Senior Level English courses.

Recognized English Proficiency Tests:

• Canadian Academic English Language Assessment (CAEL): Minimum Score: 60
• Cambridge Academic English (C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency): Minimum Score: 176 (no individual score less than 169)
• Duolingo English Test: Minimum Score: 110
• International English Language Testing System (IELTS): Minimum Score: 6.5 (no individual score less than 6.0)
• Michigan English Test (MET): Minimum Score: 85
• Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic): Minimum Score: 58 (no component score less than 50)
• Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL): Minimum Score for Internet Based Test (iBT): 80 (no component score less than 19)
