Explore Canada through Anne with an E: From conservative roots and Indigenous history to identity, self-acceptance, and belonging.

Continuing the journey of discovering Canada through everyday stories like Kim’s Convenience, we start to see how each moment on screen quietly reflects a genuine slice of modern Canadian life. If Kim’s Convenience offers a lens into the diversity of everyday life in modern Toronto, then Anne with an E gently carries us back to the 19th century, to the quiet landscapes of Prince Edward Island (PEI).No longer modern Canada, the series takes viewers back to the late 19th century, where the early foundations of Canadian society were formed. Through the journey of the red-haired girl, Anne Shirley, we not only witness a story of personal resilience, but also uncover deeper layers within the social and cultural fabric of Canada. And from there, we come to understand more deeply how Canada has become what it is today.
The Tension Between Tradition and Openness: The Community’s “Comfort Zone”
In Avonlea, we are offered a glimpse of early Canadian society in miniature, where people are closely connected, yet quietly bound by unspoken norms and deep-rooted prejudices. From the very beginning, the Cuthbert siblings’ intention to adopt a boy to help with farm work subtly reveals a practical, almost rigid mindset that had long been ingrained in the community. Anne’s arrival, a talkative and imaginative girl so entirely unlike anyone else, quickly becomes a cultural shock to this conservative village. Yet what makes her truly remarkable is that she never tries to reshape herself to fit in. Instead, her unwavering sense of self, at times stubborn and at times intensely emotional, gradually leads those around her to reconsider their own perspectives. What begins as a deviation from the norm slowly turns into a catalyst for change within the community.

In the quiet stillness of Avonlea, Anne’s arrival feels like a breath of fresh air.

From a broader perspective, this is also how Anne with an E reflects Canada’s journey, from a society once defined by rigid norms to one that gradually learns to embrace and reconcile differences. Integration, then, is not about losing one’s identity to blend into the crowd, but about the quiet persistence of proving one’s individuality and earning recognition.
Historical Wounds and the Power of Compassion
Moving beyond the story of differences within the community, Anne with an E reaches into a more uncomfortable chapter of Canada’s history. Through the story of the Mi’kmaq people, individuals once met with suspicion, pushed to the margins, and even stripped of their identity through the residential school system, the series lays bare the lines of division that once shaped society. In that context, Anne, with her innocence and compassion, is almost the only one who dares to question and stand beside them. Yet it is Ka’kwet’s forced removal that pushes the story beyond personal emotion, transforming it into a haunting and inescapable fragment of history.

Historical Wounds and the Power of Compassion

From this, the series leaves us with a deeper understanding. Canada has not always been a multicultural haven, but a nation shaped by conflict, missteps, and an ongoing effort to confront its past. Individual kindness may be where change begins, but meaningful transformation only happens when an entire community is willing to reflect and evolve.
Feminism and Independence: Breaking the “Corsets” of Society
The arrival of Miss Stacy is not merely the introduction of a new character, but something of a quiet disruption within Avonlea. In a community where life unfolds according to familiar norms, the image of a woman wearing trousers, free from the constraints of a corset, and devoted to science feels more unsettling than intriguing. Not because she does anything wrong, but because her very presence challenges what has long been accepted as “normal.”

In the late 19th century, the corset was a garment designed to shape the female body, creating a tightly cinched waist and the iconic hourglass silhouette.

Anne sees something profoundly different in Miss Stacy. Not quite a role model to become, but a possibility, a quiet invitation to imagine that life can be lived in many different ways. From that moment on, Anne begins to change. She asks more questions, challenges more, and gradually refuses to accept things simply because “that’s the way they’ve always been.” These changes are subtle, but enough to set small shifts in motion within the classroom, before gradually rippling out into the wider community.

Feminism and Independence: Breaking the “Corsets” of Society

What is most compelling is that the series never turns these changes into a grand struggle. Everything unfolds quietly, at times almost imperceptibly. Yet it is precisely this slowness that makes them feel all the more convincing. These norms are not shattered in a single moment, but gradually worn away by individuals who are willing to live, even just slightly, differently. From a present-day perspective, these changes may seem small. Yet perhaps it is precisely these subtle shifts that are at the heart of real societal change, not through grand declarations, but through the quiet transformation in how people begin to see the world.
Nature: A Sanctuary and a Kindred Companion to Free Spirits
Anne’s imagination does not exist in isolation; it is intimately intertwined with the pure beauty of Avonlea’s landscape, echoing through white cherry blossoms and the shimmering lakes beneath the summer sun. These poetic visuals do more than simply soothe the viewer; they reveal a deeper connection, one where Anne sees nature as a kindred companion.

Nature in Anne with an E

It becomes her only true sanctuary after years of quiet suffering in the orphanage, a place where a single flower or an entire forest can gently soothe the kind of pain that words could never reach. The way Anne cherishes nature is also a profound reflection of the love and respect Canadians hold for their land. For them, nature is not merely something to be used, but an inseparable part of who they are. This appreciation for simple moments, whether it is an afternoon tea by the window or the quiet transformation of maple forests in autumn, is anything but superficial. Conversely, it is this enduring connection with nature that nurtures an inner strength, allowing people to remain grounded and hopeful even in the face of adversity.
Growing Up Is Learning to Accept Yourself
Unlike the urban rhythm of Kim’s Convenience, Avonlea offers a very different portrait of Canada. It is a place where life is deeply intertwined with nature, where small communities are closely connected, and where everything moves at a gentler, slower pace. Yet it is precisely this slowness that creates the space for deeper understanding, where emotions can settle, linger, and grow more profound over time. From this perspective, Canada is not defined solely by its major cities or modern pace of life, but equally by its small communities and the quiet simplicity of its values. A peaceful afternoon, a relationship shaped over time, or the feeling of truly belonging somewhere can, at times, hold far more enduring meaning than the restless momentum of urban life.

<span style="-webkit-text-stroke-width:0px;display:inline !important;float:none;font-family:;" be="" vietnam="" pro";font-size:12px;font-style:normal;font-variant-caps:normal;font-variant-ligatures:normal;font-weight:400;letter-spacing:normal;orphans:2;text-align:center;text-decoration-color:initial;text-decoration-style:initial;text-decoration-thickness:initial;text-indent:0px;text-transform:none;white-space:normal;widows:2;word-spacing:0px;"="">Trưởng Thành Là Chấp Nhận Chính Mình (Self-Acceptance)

In that context, Anne’s journey is no longer simply a coming-of-age story, but a nuanced process of negotiating her place within the world around her. She does not reshape herself to “fit” into Avonlea. Instead, it is her differences, from her red hair to her vivid imagination, that gradually invite those around her to see the world differently. Growing up, then, is not about carving oneself to fit a mold, but about understanding and embracing what makes us who we are. If Kim’s Convenience reflects a society where people learn to coexist, then Anne with an E goes a step further by asking what it truly means to belong. We only find a true sense of belonging when a place embraces who we are, and when we, in turn, are willing to open ourselves, to love, and to become part of it.Read more:

Kim’s Convenience: How a Country Reveals Itself in Everyday Moments

Toronto Metropolitan University
