Program overview
The Academic English Program - Level 5 (AEP) is designed to equip learners with the essential academic English skills required for success in university-level courses. This program goes beyond basic English, focusing on complex language features and academic skills necessary for academic achievement. Offered at both the Thunder Bay and Orillia campuses, the AEP targets all four language areas: reading, writing, listening, and speaking. It also emphasizes critical thinking, research skills, effective academic writing, and presentation skills, ensuring students are well-prepared for their academic journey.
Program structure
The Academic English Program - Level 5 (AEP) is structured to provide a comprehensive learning experience over a semester-long duration. The program includes:
- Classes that focus on enhancing reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills.
- Development of critical thinking and research skills.
- Effective academic writing and presentation skills.
- Experiential learning through Kolb’s Cycle of Experiential Learning.
Students are required to complete an online iTEP placement test or submit an accepted English proficiency test score to determine their starting level. The program is available in various streams, including beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels, ensuring that students can progress according to their proficiency. The program runs multiple sessions throughout the year, including:
- Winter AEP: January 12 - April 17
- Spring/Summer AEP: May 4 - July 31
- Fall AEP: September 8 - December 11
