Academic Requirements

To apply for the Bachelor of Science in Nursing - Nursing: Second Entry program at York University, applicants must meet specific Academic Requirements. It is important to note that York University is a highly selective institution, and merely meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee admission. Only the most qualified candidates will be considered for this program.

• Minimum GPA: Not specified.
• Transcripts may be required to be evaluated by WES in some cases.
• International students must provide documentation based on their country of origin. For example:
  • Vietnam: Bằng Tốt Nghiệp Trung Học Phổ Thông/Senior School Graduation Certificate.

The 2nd Entry Nursing program is only open to applicants with at least 60 university credits (typically 2 years of full-time study) from an accredited institution.  All applicants to the 2nd Entry Nursing program must therefore be university applicants.

The minimum admission requirements for the 2nd Entry Nursing program are:

• Completion of at least 60 credits at a recognized university prior to admission.  There is no disciplinary requirement.
• Overall average of at least a B or better (3.0 or better on a 4-point scale)
• In the last year of study (the last 30 credits), overall average of B+ or better (3.3 or better on 4-point scale)
• Pre-requisites taken at an accredited university:
  • 6.0 credits in Psychology (Psychology Statistics and Research Methods do not fulfill this requirement) with at least a B
  • 6.0 credits in Human Anatomy and Physiology with at least a B OR 3.0 credits in Human Anatomy with at least a B and 3.0 credits in Human Physiology with at least a B
  • 3.0 credits in Statistics with at least a B
  • 3.0 credits in Microbiology with at least a B

This is a competitive program, and meeting the minimum admission requirements does not guarantee admission. Acceptance is based on the annual applicant pool, which varies each year. 

For Fall 2026, this program is open to:

• Canadian citizens
• Permanent Residents
• Protected persons
• International applicants

Missing or low pre-requisites can be taken/re-taken at any accredited in person or online university including York University, other universities in Ontario, and open enrolment universities such as Athabasca University, Thompson Rivers University, and University of New Brunswick, etc.

If you are looking take a missing pre-requisite at York University, you would be applying as a visiting student who already holds a degree. Please note that being admitted as a visiting student does not guarantee that the pre-requisite course you need will be available at a convenient time or have open spots for enrolment.  

The sample list of course equivalencies for Psychology, Human Anatomy and Physiology, Statistics, and Microbiology can provide guidance on courses that could satisfy the above minimum pre-requisite if you were to achieve a B. Please note that these courses are a sample only and not an exhaustive list. The list is also subject to change. The Office of Admission and the School of Nursing cannot pre-assess transcripts nor pre-requisites for admission prior to application.

Language Requirements

To gain admission to the Bachelor of Science in Nursing - Nursing: Second Entry program, applicants must demonstrate English language proficiency by presenting a minimum proficiency score on an accepted language test. The following English language tests are accepted:

• TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language): iBT score of 94
• IELTS (International English Language Testing Service, Academic Module): score of 7.0
• Pearson PTE Academic: score of 67
• Duolingo: score of 130
• Cambridge English Language Assessment (CAE, CPE): C1 Advanced (no score below 193)
• Canadian Academic English Language Assessment (CAEL): score of 67

Please note: The IELTS Academic test is required for admission to York University. IELTS General will not be accepted for language proficiency requirements.

English proficiency tests are valid for a period of two years. If you have completed a program that meets the English language requirements, you may not need to submit test scores. Please check with our team for more details.
