Program overview

The Material Art & Design program at OCAD University is designed for aspiring studio artists and designers. In this program, students will learn to create stunning jewellery, textiles, and ceramics. The curriculum emphasizes hands-on experience, allowing students to develop their unique designs while acquiring essential critical and business skills necessary for success in the creative industry. Taught by leading artists and designers in the fields of textiles, jewellery, and ceramics, students will have access to well-equipped studios featuring both traditional tools and modern technology.

Program structure

The Material Art & Design program spans a duration of four years. Throughout this time, students will engage in a comprehensive curriculum that includes:

  • Introductory classes in various art and design topics during the first year.
  • Increased class choices in the second year, allowing students to explore their interests further.
  • Open electives and advanced courses in the third year, focusing on professional practice and material art history.
  • A dedicated thesis project in the fourth year, culminating in a showcase at OCAD U’s Graduate Exhibition.

Students can choose to concentrate on either textiles or jewellery/metalsmithing, with opportunities to take electives in ceramics, wearable form, and wearable technology.
