Program Overview

The Primary Care Paramedic program is an entry-level care certificate designed to equip students with the essential skills to learn, assess, and treat patients in both medical and trauma emergencies. This comprehensive program emphasizes hands-on training and practical experience, ensuring that graduates are well-prepared to deliver high-quality care in critical situations. With expert instruction from industry professionals, students will gain the knowledge necessary to become effective first responders, making a significant impact in the lives of those they serve.

Program Structure

The Primary Care Paramedic program is structured to be completed in 1 year (full-time). The program includes a combination of lectures, labs, clinical simulations, and practicum placements, providing a well-rounded educational experience. Key components of the program structure include:

  • Approximately 400 hours of lectures and labs in the first six courses.
  • A final practicum placement of around 240 hours, which includes working with an ambulance service and a week in an acute care hospital emergency department.
  • Students can expect to attend classes for about 28 hours per week, with an additional 15 to 20 hours dedicated to studying and completing assignments.
  • Practicum placements may require evening, night, and weekend shifts, and travel outside of Edmonton may be necessary.

This program also emphasizes the importance of physical and mental health self-care, preparing students for the demanding nature of patient care environments.
