Program Overview

The Veterinary Medical Assistant program equips students with essential skills to support both the reception area and treatment room of veterinary facilities. This program is designed for those who have a genuine interest in animal welfare and are eager to assist veterinarians and animal health professionals. Students will learn to handle various administrative tasks, animal handling, and support with nutritional and pharmaceutical products. The Veterinary Medical Assistant program is a 1-year full-time certificate course that combines classroom instruction with practical experience. The program structure includes:

  • Hands-on experience at animal clinics across Alberta, providing real-world exposure to veterinary practices.
  • Regular support for animal health technologists at the NAIT Animal Clinic.
  • Opportunities for work-integrated learning, enhancing employability upon graduation.

This program is ideal for individuals who thrive in fast-paced environments and possess strong attention to detail. Students can expect to spend approximately 26 hours per week in classes and an additional 8 to 15 hours on studying and assignments.
