Program Overview

The Bachelor of Food Science program at McGill University's Macdonald Campus is designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to meet the global demand for safe, nutritious, and sustainable foods. This multidisciplinary program integrates concepts from chemistry, physics, biology, and engineering to enhance understanding of food processes and improve food products. Students will engage in both lectures and hands-on learning experiences in specialized food science labs, utilizing high-performance equipment to test and develop new food products. The program is accredited by the Institute of Food Technologists and recognized by the Canadian Institute of Food Science and Technology.

Program Structure

The Bachelor of Food Science program is structured to be completed in a 3-year timeframe, with a total of 90 credits required. The courses are sequenced in a specific order over eight terms, ensuring a comprehensive learning experience. Students have the option to choose between two program tracks:

  • Food Chemistry: This option includes two additional research projects and qualifies students for the Ordre des chimistes du Québec (OCQ).
  • Food Science: This track integrates courses from various disciplines related to food science, including biochemistry, microbiology, and processing.

Throughout the program, students will gain essential hands-on experience through internships or research projects, allowing them to apply their knowledge in real-world settings.

Featured Experiences

  • Hands-on learning in specialized food science labs.
  • Use of high-performance equipment for product testing and development.
  • Conducting focus groups and taste panels in unique facilities.
