Academic Requirements

For the Master of Education - Education for Change - Indigenous Education program at Lakehead University, applicants must meet the following academic requirements:

Graduates must possess a recognized Bachelor's degree or equivalent with at least a second class standing (B) based on their last 20 half courses or equivalent.
Applicants from countries with a British-patterned grading system should note:
- Overall standings are typically reported instead of an average.
- A minimum grade of B, or Second Class, Upper Division, is required.
- The National Diploma and Higher National Diploma are not accepted for admission to graduate-level programs.
- It is essential to include a copy of the institution's grading scale when submitting transcripts.
- Applicants holding degrees outside the discipline area of admission will be evaluated based on their courses taken and academic standing.
Meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee admission, as all candidates must be recommended for admission by the academic unit.

For international students, the following additional requirements apply:

An acceptable three-year or four-year Bachelor's degree and a Bachelor of Education or equivalent, each with at least a second class standing (B), or two years of professional experience with a minimum "B" average in a four-year Bachelor's degree or equivalent.
As an exception to the Faculty of Graduate Studies Master's Regulations regarding English Language Proficiency, a higher standard is required for admission to the MEd program. Applicants from non-English speaking countries must provide an acceptable English test.
Academic references are optional for the MEd program.
Applicants with an average between 70% and 75% will initially be admitted to the course route, with the possibility to request a transfer to the portfolio or thesis route once admitted.

Transcripts may be required to be evaluated by WES in some cases.

Applicants whose first language is not English must demonstrate they can cope with the language demands of an English language university and will be required to present proof of English language proficiency. Lakehead University may consider the following as proof of English language proficiency:

To satisfy Lakehead University's English language proficiency requirements, applicants can complete one of the following recognized language tests with the required minimum scores:

Canadian Academic English Language Assessment (CAEL) or CAEL CE (Computer Edition) or CAEL Online - Minimum Score: 60
Cambridge Academic English (C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency) - Minimum Score: 176 (no individual score less than 169)
Duolingo English Test - Minimum Score: 120 (no individual sub-score less than 115)
International English Language Testing System (IELTS) - Minimum Score: 6.5 (no individual score less than 6.0)
Michigan English Test (MET) - Minimum Score: 85
Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic) - Minimum Score: 58 (no component score less than 50)
Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) - Minimum Overall Score: 80 (no component score less than 19)
