Program Overview

The Motive Power Technician – Service and Management program at Cambrian College is designed for those who have a passion for vehicles and wish to enhance their mechanical talents and troubleshooting skills. This program offers hands-on training in a state-of-the-art automotive shop, combined with classroom learning, to prepare students for servicing and repairing all subsystems found in today’s gas-powered and hybrid vehicles. Special emphasis is placed on basic automotive repair, electrical systems, and components according to manufacturing procedures. Students will learn to diagnose and repair various systems, including steering, suspension, brakes, and computer systems. An exciting feature of this program is the optional, paid co-op, allowing students to apply their skills in a real-world work environment.

Program Structure

The Motive Power Technician – Service and Management program is structured to provide a comprehensive education over a period of 4 semesters (2 years). The program is delivered on-campus and full-time, ensuring students receive a balanced mix of theoretical knowledge and practical skills. Key aspects of the program structure include:

  • 50/50 split between automotive shop training and classroom instruction.
  • Capped enrolment to ensure personalized attention.
  • Educational partnership with ConsuLab.
  • Diploma equates to three levels of required theory towards your apprenticeship Certificate of Qualification.
  • Optional paid co-op to gain industry training.
  • Opportunity for select students to participate in the Skills Ontario Competition.
