Motive Power Technician – Automotive (co-op)

Academic Requirements

To apply for the Motive Power Technician – Automotive (Co-op) program at Niagara College, applicants must meet the following Academic Requirements:

Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD), or equivalent, including the following required courses:

• English – any Grade 12 (C) or (U), or equivalent
• Mathematics – any Grade 11 (C), (U), or (M), or equivalent

Recommended Courses and/or Skills: While not mandatory, the following courses and skills may enhance academic success in this program:

• College and Apprenticeship Mathematics – Grade 12 (C)
• Physics – Grade 11 (U) or Grade 12 (C) or (U)
• Transportation Technology – Grade 11 (C) or Grade 12 (C)

Selection and Ranking: Applications are evaluated based on the published Academic Requirements. When the applicant provides proof of meeting the requirements, an offer of admission can be issued, provided space is available in the program.

Program Requirements:

• Students are responsible for their own transportation to complete program requirements, which may not be easily accessible by public transportation.
• Program requirements could include co-ops, placements, volunteer requirements, practical labs, field projects, assignments, clinicals, or any other off-campus visits required as part of the program’s curriculum.
• A class G driver's license is strongly recommended.

Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP) Certification: Students must complete the Ozone Depletion Potential Certification by the end of Term 2 prior to the co-op term, as it is required to repair air conditioning systems.

Computer Requirements: Students must have a Microsoft Windows-based desktop or laptop that meets or exceeds the following general requirements:

• A desktop or laptop running on an updated Microsoft Windows operating system (Windows 11 recommended).
• Minimum 256GB SSD storage and 8 GB memory (16 GB memory is strongly recommended).
• An integrated or peripheral video camera, microphone, and speaker system.
• Reliable internet connectivity with Broadband capabilities, with a minimum download speed of 10 – 50 Mbps recommended.

Transcripts may be required to be evaluated by WES in some cases.

Language Requirements

If English is your second language, Niagara College will accept the following language proficiency scores for the Motive Power Technician – Automotive (co-op) program:

• Cambridge English Exams (B2 First/FCE, C1 Advanced/CAE or C2 Proficiency/CPE): 169 – No skill under 162.
• International English Language Testing System (IELTS): 6.0 – No individual band under 5.5.
• Internet-based (IBT) Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL): iBT: 80, Minimum: 20 Writing, 20 Speaking.
• Pearson Test of English (PTE): 58+, with no individual skill below 53.
• Duolingo English Language Test: 105+, with no individual subscore below 95.
• Canadian Academic English Language Test (CAEL): 60 – No individual band under 50.
• Completion of Niagara College’s English for Academic Preparation program (EAP) Level 5 with 70% and no individual grade under 50%.

Please note that meeting or exceeding the minimum score requirements does not guarantee admission to Niagara College, and minimum score requirements are subject to change based on program demand.
