Academic Requirements

To apply for the Bachelor of Music - Performance program, students must meet the following Academic Requirements:

Minimum GPA: An admission GPA of 2.3 on courses previously completed (minimum 24 units of course weight) in the BMus program is required.
Performance Audition: Admission is dependent upon a successful performance audition.
Music Rudiments Placement Test: Completion of a music rudiments placement test is necessary.
Department Recommendation: A recommendation from the Department of Music is required.
Deadline: Interested students must contact the Department of Music by April 1.
Prerequisite Courses: Students must have a 3.7 (A-) or higher grade in MUSIC 225.

Transcripts may be required to be evaluated by WES in some cases.

Language Requirements

To be eligible for admission to the University of Alberta, applicants must demonstrate proficiency in English. The following examinations and scores are accepted:

TOEFL iBT: Minimum score of 90, with no less than 21 on each band.
IELTS Academic: Minimum score of 6.5, with no band less than 6.0.
Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL): Minimum score of 70, with no band less than 60.
PTE Academic: Minimum score of 61, with no less than 60 in each communicative skill.
Cambridge English Scale: Minimum score of 180 on C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency, with no less than 170 in each skill.
Completion of the University of Alberta’s EAP 136/INT D 137.

Additionally, applicants may fulfill the English language proficiency requirement through:

Successful completion of three years of full-time education in English in Canada or in another country where English is the primary language of instruction.
Graduation from a recognized degree program offered by an accredited university where English is the primary language of instruction.
