Personal Support Worker (Kingston)

Academic Requirements

The admission requirements for the Personal Support Worker program at Kingston Campus are as follows:

Minimum Academic Qualifications:

• Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) with the majority of Grade 11 and 12 courses at the C, U, or M level including the following prerequisites:
  • Grade 12 English at the C or U level
  • Grade 11 Math

For OSSD equivalency options, please consult the relevant admission requirements.

If you are missing prerequisite courses, you may enroll in the Career/College Prep program, which is free for Ontario residents who are 19 years or older.

Transcripts may be required to be evaluated by WES in some cases.

Health Requirements:

Completion of the Immunization - Communicable Disease Form is a mandatory condition for your clinical/practical placement. THIS FORM IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY.

Additionally, proof of COVID-19 vaccination is required for individuals working or engaged in learning with the clinical and living classroom partner.

Placement Requirements:

To be eligible for unpaid placement, enrolled students will need to complete a series of MANDATORY program and agency-specific pre-placement requirements. These will be discussed during class time, and a Student Placement Facilitator will assist with any placement-related questions.

Students will need to complete the following mandatory requirements before classes begin:

1. Standard First Aid & CPR Level BLS (formerly HCP) Certification - Must be completed through a WSIB-approved training provider.
2. Police Record Check – Vulnerable Sector Screening - A recent Police Record Check including the Vulnerable Sector Screening is mandatory to begin any unpaid placement for this program.
3. Co-op Work Permit - For all international students only, this document is required to begin placement.

Language Requirements

All applicants must be fluent enough in English to understand instructors and the technical language used in their subject area.

Here are the accepted English proficiency tests and their required scores for the Personal Support Worker program:

• International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic: Overall 6.0 with no band less than 5.5
• TOEFL Internet-based Test (iBT) or Home Edition: 78
• TOEFL Computer-based Test: 213
• Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL): Overall 60
• EIKEN (Test in Practical English Proficiency): Pre-1
• The Michigan English Test: Overall 58 with no individual score below 56
• Pearson Test of English - Academic: 55
• Cambridge English Proficiency: 173
• Oxford English Language Level Test: 6
• Duolingo (Temporarily accepted): Overall 110 with no sub score less than 85
