Program Overview

The Child and Youth Care (Accelerated) program at George Brown College is designed for individuals who have already completed a two- or three-year diploma, or a three- or four-year degree. This program provides an opportunity to learn how to effectively support at-risk children, youth, and families facing developmental, mental health, emotional, and behavioral challenges. The program emphasizes the development of therapeutic skills and the ability to build strong relationships with clients, preparing graduates to become agents of change in their communities.

Program Structure

The Child and Youth Care (Accelerated) program is a full-time course of study that spans 12 consecutive months, divided into three semesters. This accelerated format allows students to complete the program in a shorter time frame compared to traditional programs. Key features of the program structure include:

  • Two supervised field placements, providing hands-on experience in real-world settings.
  • Collaborative group work and in-class activities to enhance learning.
  • Emphasis on crisis prevention and intervention training, which is mandatory in the third semester.
  • Field placements occurring in various community settings, including educational institutions, treatment centers, and youth shelters.

Students are expected to actively participate in all classes and field placements, which may require working day and evening shifts, as well as some weekends. This immersive approach ensures that graduates are well-prepared for their future careers in child and youth care.
