Academic Requirements

The admission requirements for the Advanced College Diploma in Child and Youth Care (CYCA) at Georgian College are as follows:

• Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent, or mature student status.
• Grade 12 English (C or U).
• Applicants with previous postsecondary education such as a degree or diploma from an accredited university or college in the area of Human Services, Education, Interdisciplinary Studies, Social Sciences, Psychology, or Sociology can apply transfer credits to the program upon evaluation.
• Mature students, non-secondary school applicants (19 years or older), and home school applicants may also be considered for admission. Eligibility may be met by applicants who have taken equivalent courses, upgrading, completed their GED, and equivalency testing.
• Criminal Reference/Vulnerable Sector Check: Placement agencies require an up-to-date clear criminal reference check and vulnerable sector check prior to going out on placement. Students should obtain their criminal reference three months prior to placement; checks conducted earlier may not be considered current. A record of criminal offences, for which a pardon has not been granted, may prevent students from completing their placements, thereby affecting their ability to graduate.
• Applicants may be asked to provide community agencies with proof of completion of Standard First Aid and CPR Level C certification, Crisis Intervention certification, as well as an up-to-date immunization record with a two-step TB test in some circumstances to proceed with field placement.
• Proof of completion of the Ontario Ministry of Labour Health and Safety Awareness training must also be provided before proceeding on field placement.
• Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) requirements: All Georgian College students are required to bring their own device that meets the technology requirements for their program.

Transcripts may be required to be evaluated by WES in some cases.

Language Requirements

The language of instruction at Georgian College is English. All applicants for whom English is not their first language must provide proof of language proficiency. For the Advanced College Diploma - Child And Youth Care (CYCA) program, the following English language tests are accepted:

• Duolingo Language Test: 110
• TOEFL internet-based test (IBT): 79
• TOEFL paper-based test: 550
• IELTS Academic only: 6.0
• YELT: 1-5
• TOEIC (Public Test): 800
• Graduate of Level 8 of Georgian’s GAAS – English for Academic Purposes: 60% in certificate or completion of level 8 with 70% or higher
• Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL)/CAEL Online: 60
• Pearson Test of Academic English (PTE): 58
• Cambridge English: C1 Advanced (CAE): 170
