Program Overview

Have you ever ridden an elevator or escalator and wondered how they work? The Mechanical Technician – Elevating Devices program at Durham College prepares you to enter this trade as an apprentice. With the growth in high-rise buildings, the demand for skilled elevating devices mechanics is on the rise in Durham Region and the Greater Toronto Area. This program positions you for employment as an apprentice upon graduation, and graduates are eligible for exemption from all in-school requirements for the EDM 636E apprenticeship training. Additionally, you will receive TSSA-mandated EDM-T Safety Training certification and meet the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development Working at Heights training requirement.

Program Structure

The Mechanical Technician – Elevating Devices program is designed to be completed in four semesters. The program is delivered in person, allowing students to engage directly with instructors and hands-on equipment. Key features of the program include:

  • Co-op option available, providing practical work experience.
  • Hands-on training with actual elevating equipment.
  • Focus on sustainability best practices in the workplace.

Students will be invited to apply for the co-op option during their first semester, with a competitive process for securing work terms. The co-op work term is a mandatory component, allowing students to gain valuable industry experience before graduation.
