Academic Requirements

The Academic Requirements for the Biomedical Engineering Technology program are as follows:

• High School Diploma: Applicants must have a high school diploma or a higher level of education.
• Prerequisite Courses:
  • Math: One of the following (or equivalent):
    • Pre-Calculus 12 (67%) or
    • MATH 0001 - Technical Mathematics – BCIT (67%) or
    • MATH 0120 - Math 12 Competency Test – BCIT (67%) or
    • 3.0 credits of post-secondary math (linear algebra, pre-calculus, or calculus) at 100 level or higher (67%) from a recognized institution.
  • Chemistry: One of the following (or equivalent):
    • Chemistry 11 (67%) or
    • Chemistry 12 (67%) or
    • CHEM 0110 – Chemistry 11 Challenge Exam – BCIT (67%) or
    • 3.0 credits of post-secondary chemistry (67%) from a recognized institution.
  • Physics: One of the following (or equivalent):
    • Physics 12 (67%) or
    • PHYS 0312 - Technology Entry Physics 2 – BCIT (67%) or
    • 3.0 credits of post-secondary physics (67%) from a recognized institution.
• Indigenous Applicants: A dedicated Indigenous admissions process is established, reserving one seat per intake for Indigenous students. Applicants must self-identify as Indigenous and complete the program’s entrance requirements.
• International Applicants: This program is available to international applicants. A valid BCIT study permit is required prior to starting the program. Students must complete the mandatory work component to qualify for graduation, requiring a co-op work permit.
• Transcripts may be required to be evaluated by WES in some cases.

Language Requirements

To apply for the Biomedical Engineering Technology Diploma program, applicants must demonstrate proficiency in English. The following assessments are accepted for Category 2 Language Requirements:

• English Studies 12 or English First People 12 or Acceptable equivalent high school course - 67%
• BCIT English Competency Assessment:
  • COMM 0015 – English Competency Assessment and COMM 0033 – English Speaking and Listening Assessment - 70%
• COMM 1009 – Technical Writing: Definitions, Instructions and Process Descriptions - 67%
• COMM 1106 – Introduction to Business and Technical Communication (With Language Development Component) - 67%
• BCIT Professional English Language Development (PELD):
  • COMM 0030 – Speaking and Listening Skills for EAL Students 2 and COMM 0005 – Technical Communication Skills for EAL Students 4 - 70%
• COMM 0007 – Introductory Communication for Technology Entry and COMM 0016 – Communication with ELT - 67%
• BCIT Technical Academic English (TAE) 5 - 60%
• Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL) Test - 70 overall band score with no component below 60
• International English Language Testing System (IELTS) - Overall score 6.5 with no band less than 5.5
• Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic) - Overall score 60 with no skill score less than 60
• Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL iBT) - Overall score 86 with no section score less than 20
