The Bachelor of Education (BEd) program at UPEI is a 12-month post-degree program designed to equip students with the essential knowledge and skills needed to teach in modern classrooms. Academic Requirements

To apply for the Bachelor of Education - Intermediate/Senior program at UPEI, applicants must meet the following academic requirements:

Applicants must have completed the requirements for their undergraduate degree from an approved registered university and have the degree conferred before June 30.
Applicants must normally have an overall average of not less than 70% (at least between C+ and B-) computed on the 20 highest grades of the last 22 courses (3 semester hour of credit). Applicants with an average of less than 70% may be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Applicants must have at least 6 semester hours of credit in English or equivalent (at least 3 of which are recommended to be in Composition).
Applicants must have completed academic courses in subjects taught in the school system which satisfy the requirements for the program level (Intermediate/Senior) into which they seek admission, including:

At least 42 credit hours of university coursework in a first teachable area.
At least 18 credit hours of university coursework in a second teachable area, preferably in a different subject from the first.

The following courses relate to teachable areas:

English (includes Communications, Creative Writing, Drama, Journalism, Media Studies, and Theatre)
Social Studies (includes various disciplines such as History, Geography, and Sociology)
Science (includes Chemistry, Biology, Physics, and Environmental Science)
Mathematics (includes Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science)

Each teachable subject area will have a maximum enrolment capacity and may therefore be a consideration when making admission decisions for the intermediate-senior cohort.

For international students, it is important to note that:

Applicants whose first language is not English must also satisfy the UPEI English Language Proficiency requirements.

Transcripts may be required to be evaluated by WES in some cases.

The language of instruction at the University of Prince Edward Island is English. All academically admissible applicants are required to demonstrate proficiency in the English language prior to undertaking studies. Proficiency may be demonstrated by:

- Overall score of 6.5 with no band below 6
- Overall score of 7 with 7 in writing and speaking; 6.5 in reading and listening (for Education)

- 550 with minimum TWE of 5.5

TOEFL internet-based test:
- 4.5, with no band below 4
- 5, no score below 4.5 (for Education)
CAEL (including CAEL Online):
- 60
- 70 (for Education)
Pearson Test of English:
- 58
- 66 (for Education)
Cambridge B2 First, C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency:
- Overall score of 176 with 176 in writing and no other skill below 169
- Overall score of 185 with 185 in writing and speaking; 176 in reading and listening (for Education)
Duolingo:
- Overall score: 120 with minimum subscores: Literacy 115, Comprehension 115, Conversation 115, Production 115

Applicants with scores below the minimum may be admitted conditionally, except for those seeking admission to Nursing, Radiography, Education, or Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. Please check with our team for more details.
