The Social Service Worker – Immigrants and Refugees (Accelerated) (SSIA) program is a pioneering initiative in Ontario, designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of the support systems for newcomers in Canada. This one-year accelerated program allows students to enhance their existing qualifications while specializing in social service work focused on immigrants and refugees. The curriculum emphasizes critical and anti-oppressive perspectives, preparing graduates to effectively assist individuals and families during their migration and integration journeys. Students will engage in a blend of theoretical learning and practical application, ensuring they are well-equipped to promote social justice and equity in their future careers.

Program structure

The SSIA program is structured to be completed in 3 semesters (12 months), providing a fast-paced educational experience. The program includes:

  • A seven-week summer semester starting in early May.
  • A regular academic year commencing the day after Labour Day and concluding in mid-April.
  • Full-time study options to ensure an immersive learning experience.

Students will participate in a hybrid delivery format, combining online coursework with essential in-person classes to develop interpersonal communication skills. Additionally, the program offers a unique opportunity for students to engage in:

  • Unpaid field placements specifically within immigration, migration, and settlement services.
  • Hands-on experience through a 400-hour placement during the second and third semesters.

This structure is designed to ensure that students not only gain theoretical knowledge but also practical skills necessary for effective social service work.
