Program Overview

Sheridan’s Social Service Worker – Gerontology program is designed to equip students with the essential skills and expertise needed for a rewarding career working with older adults. As the demand for social service workers specializing in gerontology continues to grow due to the increasing senior population in Canada, this program addresses the pressing needs of society. Students will learn the foundations of social service work while focusing on the unique challenges and opportunities associated with aging. The program emphasizes hands-on experience, allowing students to apply their knowledge in real-world settings.

Program Structure

The Social Service Worker – Gerontology program is structured over a duration of 2 years, consisting of 4 semesters. The program is offered at the Davis Campus in Brampton and also has a virtual option available. Key features of the program structure include:

  • Field practicums in Semesters 2, 3, and 4, providing students with valuable on-the-job experience.
  • Hands-on learning opportunities to support older adults in various settings.
  • Access to a faculty of community service professionals, including social workers and gerontology specialists.
  • Eligibility for professional registration with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers upon graduation.
  • Opportunities for further education, allowing graduates to enter directly into Year 3 of Sheridan's Honours Bachelor of Social and Community Development or Year 2 of the Honours Bachelor of Community Safety degree program.
