Are you interested in pursuing a career in firefighting? The Firefighter, Pre-Service Education and Training (FFP) program is a 12-month certificate program designed to prepare you for the challenges and rewards of a career as a firefighter or rescue specialist. This program includes comprehensive studies in fire ground operations, fire suppression, emergency medical responder (EMR), and fire investigation. You will also gain hands-on experiential learning in fire apparatus operation, technical rescue, and hazardous materials. Accredited by the Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office (OFM), this program equips you with several National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) professional qualifications, along with the essential knowledge and practical skills needed to excel in the fire service field.

Program structure

The Firefighter, Pre-Service Education and Training program is structured to provide a thorough education in firefighting over a duration of 3 semesters (12 months). The program is delivered in-person at the Newnham campus, ensuring that students receive hands-on training and practical experience. Key features of the program structure include:

  • Hybrid delivery format, combining online coursework with in-person learning requirements.
  • Hands-on experiential learning opportunities in various firefighting techniques.
  • Accreditation by the Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office (OFM).
