Academic Requirements

The Practical Nursing (PSW to PN Bridging Stream) program at Mohawk College has specific academic requirements that applicants must meet to be considered for admission. This program is competitive and has limited enrollment, meaning that meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee admission.

Applicants are required to:

Apply through Ontario Colleges to program number 758 Practical Nursing (PSW to PN Bridging Stream).
Submit proof of completion of the following courses:
- Grade 12 English C or U
- Grade 10 Mathematics, D or P
Submit proof of completion of a Personal Support Worker Certificate program from an Ontario community college, a private college, career college, or local board of education, or a program directly equivalent to a Personal Support Worker certificate program.

For international students, proof of English proficiency must be submitted if English is not their first language. This can include various accepted equivalents for Grade 12 English.

Additionally, successful completion of Professional Practice is an academic requirement across all semesters of the Practical Nursing program. This includes a clear Police Records Check for Service with the Vulnerable Sector (PRCSVS), which must be submitted to be eligible for clinical placements. If a student registers without a clear PRCSVS and cannot participate in placement, they will not be able to progress in the program.

Preclearance requirements include:

Clear PRCVS, completed within the last 6 months and valid for the full upcoming semester
Immunizations: Tdap, Varicella, Hep B, MMR
Tuberculin Skin Test
Flu Vaccine
COVID-19 Vaccines
Standard First Aid & CPR-Level BLS/HCP
Mask Fit

Language Requirements

For the Practical Nursing (PSW to PN Bridging Stream) program, the following English language proficiency tests are accepted for applicants where English is not their first language:

GAS-EAP (478) Program Level 8
TOEFL - minimum score of 560 (83 Internet based)
IELTS Academic - minimum score of 6.5 overall with no band less than 6.0
CAEL - 70, no sub-test band score less than 60
PTE Academic - 60 overall with a minimum score of 60 in Writing and Speaking
