Academic Requirements

For international applicants interested in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) (Collaborative) Program at the Western Regional School of Nursing (WRSON), there are specific requirements to be aware of:

Priority for Admission: Priority is given to residents of Newfoundland and Labrador, but applications from international students are welcomed.
Prerequisite Courses:
- International applicants are advised to take courses at Memorial University for two semesters before applying if they do not meet the prerequisites.
- Required courses include:
  - Biology 1001 and Biology 1002
  - One of Chemistry 1010, 1050, 1051, 1001, or 1810
  - Three credit hours in Math
High School Applicants:
- Applicants directly out of high school must complete:
  - Grade 11 Biology
  - Grade 12 Biology
  - Grade 12 Chemistry
  - Grade 12 Math
  - Grade 12 English
  - One grade 12 social science or modern language course
Competitive Average: To be competitive for admission, applicants should have a minimum average of 70% from one semester of the previous calendar year, with at least three courses completed.
Required Items for International Students:
- Proof of Indigenous Ancestry (if applicable)
- Transcripts - Official transcripts must be submitted to the Office of the Registrar.
- References will only be requested if necessary.
Transcripts: Students applying from a post-secondary institution other than Memorial University must provide a current official interim transcript by the application deadline.
Transcripts may be required to be evaluated by WES in some cases.

Language Requirements

English language proficiency for general admission may be demonstrated through a valid score on one of the following standardized tests taken within two years prior to the start of the semester of admission. Final results should be submitted based on the instructions listed with each test.

Cambridge English Language Assessment
- Requirement: A minimum score of 176 in C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency.
- Submission: Certificate should be uploaded to the admissions portal.
Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL) Assessment
- Requirement: A minimum overall score of 60.
- Submission: Official score report should be uploaded to the admissions portal.
Duolingo English Test (DET)
- Requirement: A minimum overall score of 115.
- Submission: Upon receipt of your certified test results, you should send the results from your Duolingo account to Memorial University of Newfoundland.
International English Language Testing System (IELTS)
- Requirement: A minimum overall band score of 6.5 on the IELTS Academic or IELTS Academic for UKVI with at least a band 6 in reading and writing. General Training results are not acceptable.
- Submission: Test report form should be uploaded to the admissions portal.
Michigan English Test (MET)
- Requirement: A minimum score of 59 is required on the MET.
- Submission: Document must be sent directly from official testing authority to the Office of the Registrar by post or courier.
Pearson Test of Academic English (PTE ACADEMIC)
- Requirement: A minimum overall score of 60.
- Submission: Score Report should be uploaded to the admissions portal.
Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)
- Requirement: A minimum score of 83 on the TOEFL iBT or TOEFL iBT Home Edition, with a minimum score of 20 in reading and writing.
- Submission: Score Report should be uploaded to the admissions portal.
