Program overview

The Construction Techniques (Plumbing, Electrical, Carpentry, and Masonry) program at Conestoga College is designed for those looking to enter the trades. This one-year Ontario College Certificate program focuses on safety and hands-on skills development. Students will learn essential concepts across four different trades, preparing them for a rewarding career in the construction industry. With experienced faculty guiding the way, students will strengthen their math and employment skills, making it an excellent foundation for further studies or immediate entry into the workforce.

Program structure

The Construction Techniques program is structured to provide a comprehensive learning experience over a one-year period, divided into two academic terms. The program is delivered in person at the Cambridge – Reuter Dr. campus and consists of:

  • Seven-week blocks focusing on four trades: masonry, plumbing, electrical, and carpentry.
  • Hands-on training at Conestoga’s dedicated Skilled Trades Campus.
  • Opportunities to develop both technical skills and essential employment skills.

This program is highly competitive, and prospective students are encouraged to apply by specific deadlines: February 1 for September intake, July 15 for January intake, and November 1 for May intake. Note that students living outside of Ontario are not eligible to apply.

  • Construction Laborer: Assists in various construction tasks, including site preparation and material handling.
  • Plumber: Installs and repairs piping systems, ensuring proper water flow and drainage.
  • Electrician: Works on electrical systems, including installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
  • Carpenter: Constructs, installs, and repairs structures and fixtures made of wood and other materials.
  • Masonry Worker: Builds and repairs structures using bricks, concrete blocks, and stone.
