Program overview

The Machinist Foundation Certificate program at BCIT equips students with essential theory and practical skills to enter the machinist trade. This program is designed to provide a solid foundation in machining, enabling graduates to pursue further apprenticeship opportunities. Upon completion, students are eligible for credit towards the first level of machinist apprenticeship, which includes 500 work-based training hours and the ITA Machinist Apprenticeship Level 1 technical training. The program is delivered in person, ensuring hands-on experience in a supportive learning environment.

Program structure

The Machinist Foundation program spans a duration of 25 weeks and is offered on a full-time basis. The structure of the program is designed to balance theoretical knowledge with practical application, comprising approximately 50% theory and 50% hands-on learning. Key features of the program include:

  • In-person delivery at the Burnaby Campus
  • A two-week break during the winter
  • Comprehensive training that prepares students for the machinist trade

Students will gain valuable skills in operating various machine tools and understanding engineering drawings, which are crucial for their future careers. The program also prepares students for potential co-op or internship opportunities, enhancing their employability in the field.

Featured Experiences

The Machinist Foundation program offers several unique experiences that enhance the learning journey:

  • Hands-on practice in a fully equipped machine shop environment
  • Exposure to both traditional machining techniques and modern CNC (Computer Numerical Control) operations
  • Opportunities to work on real-world projects, allowing students to apply their skills in practical scenarios
  • Access to experienced instructors who provide mentorship and guidance throughout the program
  • Networking opportunities with industry professionals during training

Career Options

Graduates of the Machinist Foundation program can pursue a variety of career paths in Canada, including:

  • Machinist: Set up and operate machine tools to produce precision parts and components.
  • CNC Operator: Use computer numerical control machines to manufacture parts with high accuracy.
  • Tool and Die Maker: Design and create tools, dies, and special guiding and holding devices for manufacturing processes.
  • Manufacturing Technician: Assist in the production process, ensuring quality control and efficiency in manufacturing operations.
  • Quality Control Inspector: Inspect and test products to ensure they meet specified standards and regulations.

These roles require a solid understanding of machining principles, mathematics, and mechanical engineering, making the Machinist Foundation program an excellent stepping stone for a successful career in the manufacturing industry.
