Academic Requirements

For the Marine Mechanical Technician Foundation program, applicants must meet specific entrance requirements to be considered for admission. Here are the key requirements:

English Language Proficiency: Applicants must demonstrate proficiency in English through one of the following:
- Category 3 – English Studies 12 (50%) or equivalent
- BCIT English Trades Entry Assessment
BCIT will accept a Grade 11 English final grade with proof of registration in English 12 for entry into the program.
Mathematics: Applicants must have one of the following:
- Foundations of Math and Pre-Calculus 10 (50%)
- Workplace Math 10 (50%)
- Other acceptable BC and Yukon courses
- BCIT Math Trades Entry Assessment
Recommended for Success: A driver's licence (Class N or 5) valid in BC is strongly recommended.
International Applicants: This program is available to international applicants. A valid BCIT study permit is required prior to starting the program. Please note that international students are not eligible to continue to an apprenticeship training program.
Transcripts may be required to be evaluated by WES in some cases.

English is the language used for instruction and communication at BCIT. All applicants and registrants, regardless of their citizenship status or country of origin, must demonstrate a satisfactory level of English proficiency. This proficiency requirement ensures that all students have the necessary language skills to succeed in their chosen courses and programs. The assessment of English Language Proficiency (ELP) is based on the categories listed below.

The following English Language Proficiency assessments are accepted for the Marine Mechanical Technician Foundation program:

International English Language Testing System (IELTS) - Overall score 7, No band less than 6.0
Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL) Test - 80 overall band score with no component below 70
Duolingo English Test - 130 overall, No integrated subscore less than 105
Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic) - Overall score 65, No skill score less than 60
Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL iBT) - Overall score 90, No section score less than 20
Cambridge Assessment English - C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency with minimum overall score of 185
