Academic Requirements

The BCIT Sheet Metal Worker Foundation program has specific academic requirements that applicants must meet to be considered for admission. Here are the key points regarding the entrance requirements:

English Language Proficiency: Applicants must demonstrate proficiency in English through one of the following:
- Category 3 – English Studies 12 (50%) or equivalent
- BCIT English Trades Entry Assessment
Mathematics Requirement: Applicants must meet one of the following math requirements:
- Pre-Calculus 11 (50%)
- Foundations of Math 11 (50%)
- Workplace Math 11 (50%)
- Other acceptable BC and Yukon courses
- BCIT Math Trades Entry Assessment

International Applicants: This program is open to international students. However, it is important to note that international students are not eligible to continue to an apprenticeship training program. A study permit is not required for programs with a duration of 6 months or less, allowing students to complete the program with a valid status in Canada.

Prerequisite Courses: Acceptance to the Sheet Metal Foundation Program is required as a prerequisite for the course SMTL 1151, which covers essential skills and knowledge in the sheet metal trade.

Language Requirements

To apply for the Sheet Metal Worker Foundation program, you must demonstrate proficiency in English. The following assessments are accepted:

International English Language Testing System (IELTS) - Overall score 7, no band less than 6.0
Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL) Test - 80 overall band score with no component below 70
Duolingo English Test - 130 overall, no integrated subscore less than 105
Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic) - Overall score 65, no skill score less than 60
Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL iBT) - Overall score 90, no section score less than 20
Cambridge Assessment English - C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency with minimum overall score of 185
