Bachelor of Science - Pre-Psychiatric Nursing

Academic Requirements

For students interested in applying to the Bachelor of Science - Pre-Psychiatric Nursing program at Brandon University, the following Academic Requirements must be met:

• Official transcripts/documents must be sent directly from the granting institution or examination authority.
• All documents submitted become the property of Brandon University.
• Students in their final year of high school must include a letter from the Principal or designate attesting that graduation from high school will occur before the start of University.
• Transcripts not in English must be translated by a certified translator along with a note indicating that the translator received documents in a sealed envelope. The original official transcript and the translation must be sent to the Admissions Office.
• Secondary School Admission Requirement: Minimum five academic subjects in final year or senior exit exam with an overall average of C or higher on those subjects.
• British Patterned Education (GCE): Minimum 2 Advanced (A) levels and 3 Ordinary (O) levels required with an average of C or higher on those subjects.
• Two Advanced Subsidiary (AS) levels can be substituted for one Advanced (A) level course.
• International Baccalaureate (IB): International Baccalaureate Diploma with a minimum overall score of 24 points, including at least three Higher Level courses.
• West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE): C5 or higher in a minimum of five subjects, including English and Mathematics.

General international student admission requirements:

• Provide official secondary-school (high school) transcripts. Documents not in English must include a certified English translation.
• Demonstrate English language proficiency via one of the approved tests / modes.
• Meet the application deadline for international undergraduate admissions: for Fall (September) entry the deadline is April 1.
• Meet the general admission requirements of Brandon University for undergraduate study: e.g., high school graduation equivalent, required preparatory subjects.

Program-specific requirements for the Pre-Psychiatric Nursing year and BScPN admission:

• Applicants must satisfy the general admission standards as above.
• For the Pre-Psychiatric Nursing (first) year: Students entering must have completed high school English (Grade 12 English or equivalent). While not strictly required for admission, it is strongly recommended that students entering have Grade 12 Biology and Grade 12 Math (Pre-Calculus or Applied) to be prepared for Anatomy & Physiology and Statistics courses.
• Upon successful completion of the Pre-Psychiatric Nursing year (the required courses) students may apply to Year 2 of the BScPN.
• Admission into Year 2 of the BScPN program is competitive and based on:
• Grade Point Average (GPA) in the Pre-Psychiatric Nursing year courses (e.g., in one source: 70% of admissions decision)
• A “Casper” test (or equivalent online assessment) for some health-studies programs (this is explicitly mentioned for BN; for BScPN a similar assessment may apply)
• Additional requirements prior to entry into professional years include:
• Minimum age of 18 by the application deadline.
• Child Abuse Registry Check (within 6 months), Adult Abuse Registry Check (within 6 months), Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Check (within 6 months).
• Immunization records.
• Requisite Skills and Abilities for psychiatric nursing: applicants must be able to demonstrate the requisite skills and abilities required for the BScPN program and profession.
• Important notes for international applicants to this program:
• The program has limited seats: e.g., for Year 2 at the Brandon campus, about 35 seats; at the Winnipeg site more.
• Meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee admission — because it is competitive.
• Ensure you submit all required documents well before the deadline, including English proficiency, transcripts, etc.
• If your high school curriculum is outside Canada (or not equivalent), you may be evaluated on equivalency and may need to meet additional preparatory course requirements.
• Transcripts may be required to be evaluated by WES in some cases.

Language Requirements

English is the primary language of instruction at Brandon University. To ensure success in their programs, all applicants must demonstrate an acceptable level of academic English proficiency, regardless of their citizenship status or country of origin. Here are the accepted methods to meet the English language proficiency requirement:

1. Successful completion of a three‐year secondary school program at a school where English is the language of instruction.
2. Successful completion of three consecutive years of full‐time post‐secondary study at a recognized institution where English is the language of instruction (overall post‐secondary CGPA must be 2.0).
3. Any combination of three consecutive years of full‐time study in secondary and post‐secondary education at recognized institutions where English is the language of instruction (overall post‐secondary CGPA must be 2.0).
4. Graduation from a Manitoba high school with at least one Grade 12 English 40S credit with a minimum grade of 70%.
5. Graduation from a Canadian high school (outside Manitoba) with at least one Grade 12 English credit equivalent to Manitoba 40S with a minimum grade of 70%.
6. Completion of the International Baccalaureate (IB) Higher Level (HL) English course with a score of four (4) or greater.
7. Completion of Advanced Placement (AP) English Literature and Composition or Language and Composition with a score of four (4) or greater.
8. Completion of a recognized secondary school completion exam with minimum final grade in English subject as specified below:

1. Completion of an accredited undergraduate degree from a recognized post‐secondary institution where English is the language of instruction (overall post‐secondary CGPA must be 2.00).
2. Completion of an accredited graduate degree (minimum two‐year program) from a recognized post‐secondary institution where English is the language of instruction (overall post‐secondary CGPA must be 2.00).
3. Successful completion of Brandon University’s English for Academic Purposes (EAP) Tier 4.
4. Completion of a recognized English Language Assessment Test with the appropriate minimum score:

Examination results must be no more than two years old at the time of submission.

Mature and Home School applicants who cannot demonstrate proficiency through any of the 12 criteria will be assessed on an individual basis in consultation with the University Registrar and Dean of the faculty/school to which they are seeking admission.
