Program Overview

The Resource Management Officer Technology Diploma Program at Vancouver Island University is designed to equip students with the skills necessary for careers focused on the protection and management of Canada’s fisheries, wildlife, and parks resources. This program is supported by an Advisory Committee that includes representatives from various governmental and environmental organizations. Students will gain practical experience through a required 2-week practicum in their second year, allowing them to apply their knowledge in real-world settings. The program emphasizes hands-on learning and encourages students to seek summer employment in related fields to enhance their practical skills.

Program Structure

The Resource Management Officer Technology Diploma Program spans a total of 2 years and requires students to complete a total of 73 credits across two academic years. The program is structured as follows:

  • Year 1: 37 credits
  • Year 2: 36 credits

Students are required to participate in a 2-week practicum during the Fall semester of their second year. Additionally, students are encouraged to seek employment with resource management agencies during the summer between their first and second years. The program also includes various options for experiential learning, such as:

  • Fieldwork with natural resource law enforcement agencies
  • Hands-on training in monitoring illegal activities
  • Opportunities for summer employment in related fields

Students must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0 to graduate and are expected to complete all program requirements within a maximum of 3 years.
