Earn a Master of Indigenous Education from the University of Regina. This program is designed to prepare graduates to be effective educators and leaders in Indigenous Education. Students will have opportunities to learn and experience various forms and systems of Indigenous knowledge, conduct research with Indigenous peoples, and integrate Indigenous knowledge into school curricula. The program is tailored for teachers currently working in band or urban schools with high Indigenous student populations, as well as those interested in Indigenous education. Graduates will gain knowledge about Indigenization, decolonization, and reconciliation, becoming leaders and advocates in teaching, language revitalization, land-based education, and social policy work.

The Master of Indigenous Education program offers three distinct routes: thesis-based, project-based, and course-based. The program is designed to be completed in 2 years. Here are some key features of the program structure:

Academic Requirements

All graduate programs at the University of Regina are competitive. Students who meet the minimum criteria noted below may not be accepted as programs generally receive more applicants than they can admit. Students with the most competitive applications (e.g. higher average, more experience, etc.) are the ones offered acceptance into graduate programs.

Master’s Degree:

A graduating average of at least 70 per cent from a four-year baccalaureate degree (or equivalent) is required for admission to all programs except for English, History, Mathematics and Statistics, and the Master of Public Administration where the required average is 75 per cent.
Applicants with a marginally lower four-year average may be accepted if their performance in the last two complete years is significantly higher (75 per cent or more).
Applicants must have the academic background required to undertake graduate studies in their chosen field. Applicants who fail to meet this requirement but who otherwise meet the criteria may be admitted; however, background deficiencies must be addressed by taking appropriate courses either prior to or in parallel with graduate work.

International Students:

International students must provide all post-secondary transcripts and degree certificates through the WES ICAP course-by-course evaluation.
Transcripts may be required to be evaluated by WES in some cases.

Language Requirements

International applicants, except those who attended universities where the language of instruction was English, must submit proof of English proficiency, usually in the form of recognized tests. The Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research (FGSR) accepts the following tests:

TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) - Minimum score of 80 Internet-based.
CAEL - Minimum score of 70.
TOEFL iBT - Minimum score of 70.
Academic IELTS - Minimum score of 6.5 overall, with no band lower than 6.0.
PTE (Pearson Test of English) - Minimum score of 59.
MET (Michigan English Test) - Minimum score of 54.
U of R ESL - Completion of EAP 100/101.
Duolingo - Minimum score of 125 overall, with at least 120 for Speaking, Writing, and Reading, and 115 for Listening.

Please note that a minimum score may render an applicant ineligible for graduate teaching assistantships.

If a student is taking ESL at the University, they must successfully complete EAP 100/101 in order to be considered for graduate work. EAP 100/101 does not meet the minimum English proficiency requirements for some programs. For those programs, students are required to take a different test to meet Academic Requirements.
