Academic Requirements

For the Bachelor of Arts & Science in Philosophy & Agricultural Studies program, the admission requirements vary based on the province of the applicant's high school education. Here are the specific requirements for Canadian high school students:

• Alberta: Must have completed five courses with a minimum 65% average, including:
  • English Language Arts 30-1
  • Three from the following: Aboriginal Studies 30, Biology 30, Chemistry 30, Mathematics 30-1 or 30-2, Physics 30, Social Studies 30-1 or 30-2, etc.
  • One additional requirement at the 30 level worth at least five credits.
• British Columbia: Must have completed five courses with a minimum 65% average, including:
  • English 12 or English First Peoples 12
  • Three from the following: Human Geography 12, Law Studies 12, Chemistry 12, etc.
  • One additional requirement at the 12 level worth at least four credits.
• Manitoba: Must have completed five courses with a minimum 65% average, including:
  • Comprehensive Focus 40S or Literary Focus 40S
  • Three from the following: Biology 40S, Chemistry 40S, Physics 40S, etc.
  • One additional requirement at the 40 level worth at least one credit.
• New Brunswick: Must have completed five courses with a minimum 65% average, including:
  • English 121 or 122
  • Three from the following: Biology 121, Calculus 120, Chemistry 121, etc.
  • One additional requirement at the 120, 121, or 122 level worth at least one credit.
• Newfoundland & Labrador: Must have completed five courses with a minimum 65% average, including:
  • English 3201
  • Three from the following: Biology 3201, Chemistry 3202, Physics 3204, etc.
  • One additional requirement at the 3000 level worth at least two credits.
• Northwest Territories: Must have completed five courses with a minimum 65% average, including:
  • English Language Arts 30-1
  • Three from the following: Biology 30, Chemistry 30, Mathematics 30-1 or 30-2, etc.
  • One additional requirement at the 30 level worth at least five credits.
• Nova Scotia: Must have completed five courses with a minimum 65% average, including:
  • English 12 (Academic or Advanced)
  • Three from the following: Biology 12, Chemistry 12, Global History 12, etc.
  • One additional requirement at the 12 level worth at least one credit.
• Ontario: Must have completed five courses with a minimum 65% average, including:
  • English (ENG4U)
  • Three from the following: Biology (SBI4U), Chemistry (SCH4U), Canadian and International Law (CLN4U), etc.
  • One additional requirement at the 4U or 4M level worth at least 1.0 credits.
• Prince Edward Island: Must have completed five courses with a minimum 65% average, including:
  • English 611A or 621A
  • Three from the following: Biology 621A, Chemistry 611A, Physics 621A, etc.
  • One additional requirement at the 600 level worth at least one credit.
• Quebec: Must have completed 10 courses with a minimum 65% average, including:
  • Two courses from the English Literature 603 series
  • Eight from the following: Biology 101, Chemistry 202, Mathematics 201, etc.
• Saskatchewan: Must have completed five courses with a minimum 65% average, including:
  • English Language Arts A30, B30, or 30
  • Three from the following: Biology 30, Chemistry 30, History 30, etc.
  • One additional requirement at the 30 level worth at least one credit.
• Yukon: Must have completed five courses with a minimum 65% average, including:
  • English 12 or English First Peoples 12
  • Three from the following: Human Geography 12, Political Studies 12, Chemistry 12, etc.
  • One additional requirement at the 12 level worth at least four credits.

Transcripts may be required to be evaluated by WES in some cases.

Language Requirements

The English Language Proficiency (ELP) requirement applies to all applicants to undergraduate programs, including the Bachelor of Arts & Science - Philosophy & Agricultural Studies (Optional Co-op). The following assessments are accepted to demonstrate proficiency in English:

• High School:
  1. Alberta English Language Arts 30-1, or equivalent, with a minimum final (blended) grade of 75 percent.
  2. A grade of 5 or higher in IB Higher or Standard Level English.
  3. A grade of 4 or higher in AP English.
  4. A grade of B or higher in GCE A/S-level or A-level English.
  5. Successful completion of a minimum of three consecutive years of full-time academic study in English at a secondary school in Canada or another country where English is recognized as the primary language.
• Post Secondary:
  1. Successful completion of a minimum of two years of full-time academic study in English at a post-secondary institution in Canada or another country where English is recognized as the primary language.
  2. Successful completion of an academic diploma, applied degree, or baccalaureate degree, requiring at least two years of full-time study, at a recognized post-secondary institution in Canada where the language of instruction is English.
• English for Academic Purposes:
  1. Successful completion of the Advanced Level of the University of Lethbridge English for Academic Purposes (EAP) program.
  2. A passing grade in an EAP program accepted as a means of satisfying ELP by another recognized Canadian university.
  3. A passing grade in an EAP program approved by the Manager of Admissions.
• ELP Assessments:
  1. Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL iBT) with a minimum total score of 86, with a minimum score of 20 in each section.
  2. Academic International English Language Testing System (IELTS) test with a minimum overall score of 6.5, and a minimum 6.0 in each band.
  3. Cambridge English Qualifications: C1 Advanced with a minimum score of 176, and a minimum 176 in each subscore.
  4. Cambridge English Qualifications: C2 Proficiency with a minimum score of 176, and a minimum 176 in each subscore.
  5. Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic score with a minimum overall score of 61, with a minimum score of 60 in each part.
  6. Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL) assessment with a minimum overall score of 70, with a minimum score of 60 in each component.
  7. Duolingo with a minimum overall score of 120, with a minimum score of 110 in each subscore.
