Program Overview

The Ophthalmic and Optometric Assisting program at SAIT equips students with essential skills to support eye care professionals, including ophthalmologists, optometrists, and opticians. This program emphasizes the key medical and scientific principles of eye care, enabling students to gain expertise in optimal eye health and vision care terminology and procedures. Students engage in a mix of classroom theory, hands-on lab practice, and a clinical practicum, which prepares them for two professions within one program. Graduates are well-prepared to pursue careers as assistants in various medical settings, including private eye care clinics, corporate eye care practices, and surgical eye centers.

Program Structure

The Ophthalmic and Optometric Assisting program spans a duration of 1 year and is delivered in a blended format, combining both in-person and online classes. The program structure includes:

  • A required clinical practicum in either an ophthalmology or optometry clinic
  • Hands-on lab practice to develop technical skills
  • Engagement with classroom theory to reinforce practical knowledge

Students will be assigned practicum placements based on their location preferences, although travel or relocation outside Calgary may be necessary due to limited availability. The program is designed to provide entry-level certification aligned with the competencies outlined by the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO) guidelines.
