Program Overview

The Motive Power Technician program at Mohawk College is an in-depth training program designed to equip students with essential diagnostic, repair, and maintenance skills for motive power systems. This Ontario College Diploma program spans two years and is tailored for those aspiring to build a rewarding career in the automotive industry. With a focus on hands-on experiential learning, students will gain the necessary skills to thrive in a constantly evolving field. Graduates will be well-prepared to enter the automotive trade, benefiting from exemptions from all three levels of Automotive Service Technician schooling, provided they meet the required academic standards.

Program Structure

The Motive Power Technician program is structured to provide comprehensive training over a period of two academic years (8 months each). The program includes:

  • Hands-on experiential learning in a fully equipped shop environment.
  • Training that emphasizes diagnostic, repair, and maintenance skills for automotive and light truck systems.
  • A BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) approach, requiring students to use a Windows laptop for their studies.
  • Opportunities for students to apply their skills in real-world scenarios.

This program is designed to prepare students for entry-level employment in the automotive industry, ensuring they are equipped with the latest tools, equipment, and technology. The curriculum is modeled after the Automotive Service Technician (310S) apprenticeship program, providing a solid foundation for students to build their careers.
