Academic Requirements

The Academic Requirements for the Bachelor in Architectural Science program at BCIT are as follows:

Competitive entry: Two-step process

Preference will be given to applicants with:

• Requirements completed within the last five years
• A BCIT Diploma in Architectural and Building Technology
• Academic grades above 70% average
• Related experience
• Additional post-secondary academic courses

Applicants with preferred entrance requirements are to submit transcripts and supporting documents with their online application.

Applicants currently in the final term of the diploma program must be on track to graduate by July prior to the start of the intake and may be conditionally accepted based on successful completion of their diploma.

Step 1: Meet the entrance requirements

• Post-secondary: one of the following:
  • A BCIT Diploma in Architectural and Building Technology or
  • An equivalent diploma from a recognized institution with a minimum of 60.0 credits in architectural technology or related coursework
• Complete the following form(s) for submission with your online application:
  • Mandatory Applicant Questionnaire
  • Course by Course Self-Assessment Form (if applicable)
• Submit your portfolio that includes examples of varied work demonstrating a cross-section of skills.

Transcripts may be required to be evaluated by WES in some cases.

Step 2: Department assessment

All applications will be reviewed by the program area at the application deadline. Department assessment is based on academic standing and portfolio evaluation. Admission is competitive and will be offered to the most qualified applicants.

International applicants

This program is available to international applicants. A valid BCIT study permit is required prior to starting the program.

Students are responsible for meeting all Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) PGWP eligibility requirements. Final PGWP approval is at the discretion of IRCC.

Language Requirements

To apply for the Architectural Science program at BCIT, you must demonstrate proficiency in English. The following assessments are accepted for Category 2 Language Requirements:

• English Studies 12 or English First People 12 or Acceptable equivalent high school course - 67%
• BCIT English Competency Assessment:
  • COMM 0015 – English Competency Assessment and COMM 0033 – English Speaking and Listening Assessment - 70%
• COMM 1009 – Technical Writing: Definitions, Instructions and Process Descriptions - 67%
• COMM 1106 – Introduction to Business and Technical Communication (With Language Development Component) - 67%
• BCIT Professional English Language Development (PELD):
  • COMM 0030 – Speaking and Listening Skills for EAL Students 2 and COMM 0005 – Technical Communication Skills for EAL Students 4 - 70%
• BCIT Technical Academic English (TAE) 5 - 60%
• Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL) Test - 70 overall band score with no component below 60
• International English Language Testing System (IELTS) - Overall score 6.5 with no band less than 5.5
• Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic) - Overall score 60 with no skill score less than 60
• Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL iBT) - Overall score 86 with no section score less than 20
