Program Overview

The Architectural and Building Technology (ABT) program at BCIT is a comprehensive two-year diploma program that emphasizes applied learning. Delivery: In-person classes at the Burnaby Campus
Elective Options: Students can choose from three areas of specialization in their second year: Architectural, Building Science, or Economics/Construction Operations.
Practicum Requirement: A brief industry-based work placement is mandatory for diploma completion.

Academic Requirements

Admission to the Architectural and Building Technology program is highly competitive. In 2022, BCIT admitted 1 in 2 applicants. Successful applicants exceeded entrance requirements with an average of 80% or higher, and many, but not all, had some industry experience.

Competitive Entry: Two-step process

Preference will be given to applicants with:

Academic grades above the minimum
Requirements completed within the last five years
Related experience
Additional post-secondary academic courses

Applicants with preferred entrance requirements are to submit transcripts and supporting documentation with their online application.

Step 1: Meet the following entrance requirements

Math: One of the following:
- Pre-Calculus 12 (67%) or
- Other acceptable BC and Yukon courses
Physics: One of the following:
- Physics 11 (67%) or
- Physics 12 (67%) (preferred)
Complete the following form for submission with your online application:
- Mandatory Applicant Questionnaire: This form will be used with other entrance requirements in the competitive selection for the program.

Transcripts may be required to be evaluated by WES in some cases.

Step 2: Department assessment

All applications will be reviewed by the program area at the application deadline. Admission is competitive and will be offered to the most qualified applicants.

International applicants

This program is available to international applicants. A valid BCIT study permit is required prior to starting the program. Students enrolled in this program must complete the mandatory work component to qualify for graduation. A co-op work permit is required prior to starting the work component.

Language Requirements

To apply for the Architectural and Building Technology Diploma program, you must demonstrate proficiency in English. The following English Language Proficiency assessments are accepted:

International English Language Testing System (IELTS) - Overall score 6.5, no band less than 5.5
Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL) Test - 70 overall band score with no component below 60
Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic) - Overall score 60, no skill score less than 60
Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL iBT) - Overall score 86, no section score less than 20
Duolingo English Test - 120 overall, no integrated subscore less than 95
Cambridge Assessment English - BCIT ISEP Online test (Cambridge Linguaskill) - B2 First or C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency with minimum overall score of 176

Test results must be dated no more than two years before the start date of the program you’re applying to.
