Academic Requirements

The Academic Requirements for the Social Service Worker (SSW) program are designed to ensure that students are adequately prepared for the challenges of the program and future careers in social services. Below are the key requirements:

• Minimum GPA: Students must maintain an average GPA of 2.0 to receive the credential.
• Prerequisite Courses:
  • Math 11
  • English Studies 12, English First Peoples 12, or equivalent
• Course Enrollment: Admission to this program is on a course-by-course basis. Applicants must meet the prerequisites for the individual courses in which they wish to enroll.
• Additional Requirements:
  • A work/volunteer experience résumé and a written statement describing career goals, special interests, and reasons for seeking entrance to the program.
  • Two reference forms from an employer, volunteer supervisor, teacher, or human service professional, attesting to the applicant's personal suitability for work in human services.
  • Documentation of a minimum of 45 hours of satisfactory work or volunteer experience in a human service agency related to the training program within the last three years.
  • Completion of a Criminal Record Check (CRC) is required before the practicum placement. The presence of certain crimes on the record will prevent practicum placement, graduation, and subsequent employment. Note that CRCs may take up to eight weeks.

Transcripts may be required to be evaluated by WES in some cases.

English Language Proficiency Requirements for Program Admissions

At Coast Mountain College (CMTN), English language is the primary medium of instruction, and all applicants must demonstrate English language proficiency before admission to College programs. There are three ways to meet the English language requirements for program admissions at CMTN. Applicants can fulfill the requirements by demonstrating one of the following options:

Option 1: English Language Proficiency Tests/Exams

Complete the assessments that demonstrate the required scoring level for your program of interest in listening, reading, writing, and speaking. The English proficiency test report must be submitted within two years of the test date to be considered valid.

Option 2: English Pathway Program via Partnered Language Schools

International Language Academy of Canada (ILAC English Pathway): English Studies 12, English First Peoples 12 or equivalent: ILAC PW 3.2. Note: This pathway program does not apply to admissions for any health-related or nursing programs at CMTN.

Option 3: Countries that Satisfy English Language Requirements

Applicants whose native language is English and who have completed at least three years of full-time, face-to-face senior secondary school or post-secondary education in an English-medium school in specific countries do not need to submit English proficiency tests unless requested by the admissions office.
